Joakim completed his masters in computer science at Linkoping Institute of Technology. This book aims to provide an introduction to DevOps from a practical perspective, how does it fare?

DevOps is a skill increasingly in demand, it’s purpose is ‘...to make faster, more correct releases by bringing people working with different disciplines closer together.’

The book is aimed at developers and system administrators. While no previous knowledge of DevOps is required, some background knowledge of Agile, Scrum, Kanban, Puppet etc is needed to get the most out of the book. It contains 210 working pages, spread over 10 chapters.

Below is a chapter-by-chapter exploration of the topics covered.

Chapter 1 Introduction to DevOps and Continuous Delivery

The book opens with some history about DevOps, being a combination of the words ‘development’ and ‘operation’, it’s concerned with removing the wall between the two. It overlaps with Agile, automation and continuous delivery. The importance of communication, shared tools, cooperation between roles, and the meaning of waiting is discussed (waiting suggests something is wrong).

The chapter continues with a look at the different cycles within Agile, including Scrum, and Kanban, explaining DevOps supports all cycles, and encourages cooperation between groups. Some examples of how DevOps benefits Agile cycles are given (e.g. faster regular deployments). The importance of doing Agile/DevOps for improved measurable results rather than just following the steps (i.e. cargo cults), is noted. DevOps aims to make interaction with new systems faster and easier, for everyone.

The chapter ends with a brief look at how DevOps interacts with other ways of working. Typically, Agile or Lean frameworks work well with DevOps (since it came from Agile), however ITIL sometimes has problems, since it can be viewed as less flexible.

This chapter provides a useful background about what DevOps is, where it came from, and how it interacts with other frameworks. The emphasis on interaction and communication is noted.

The chapter is easy to read, well written, with useful diagrams, and helpful links to other chapters. It’s apparent that some knowledge of Agile, Scrum, Kanban, Puppet etc is needed to get the most out of the book. Perhaps these terms should have been defined here to ensure all reader are at the same level? I note Kanban is described in chapter 9. These traits apply to the whole of the book.

Conclusion

This book aims to provide an introduction to DevOps from a practical perspective, and succeeds. The book is generally easy to read, well written, with useful diagrams, and helpful links to other chapters. The place of DevOps in the various stages of the Continuous Delivery pipeline is described well, and there are plenty of practical example problems and suggested solutions.

It’s apparent that some background knowledge of Agile, Scrum, Kanban, Puppet etc is needed to get the most out of the book. It would have been useful to have defined some of these basic terms in Chapter 1, to ensure all readers are at the same assumed level of understanding.

Some chapters, for example Chapter 3, have areas that aren’t cohesive, with subsections appearing without sufficient context or linkage.

If you come from a Windows development/admin background you can expect a few more problems reading the text than if you’re from a Unix/Java background.

Overall, this is a useful introduction and overview to DevOps.

This book provides an insightful overview of how to get started with DevOps.

The author makes the specific components of DevOps understandable and easily accessible both for developers and operations. The book is littered with examples and practical solutions to real world problems.

The book nicely summarised all the aspects of the field of DevOps. It was an easy read and I highly recommended for anyone whose interested in DevOps.

In her examination of the culture of Italian fascism, Mabel Berezin focuses on how Mussolini's regime consciously constructed a nonliberal public sphere to support its political aims. Fascism stresses form over content, she believes, and the regime tried to build its political support through the careful construction and manipulation of public spectacles or rituals such as parades, commemoration ceremonies, and holiday festivities.

The fascists believed they could rely on the motivating power of spectacle, and experiential symbols. In contrast with the liberal democratic notion of separable public and private selves, Italian fascism attempted to merge the public and private selves in political spectacles, creating communities of feeling in public piazzas. Such communities were only temporary, Berezin explains, and fascist identity was only formed to the extent that it could be articulated in a language of pre-existing cultural identities.

In the Italian case, those identities meant the popular culture of Roman Catholicism and the cult of motherhood. Berezin hypothesizes that at particular historical moments certain social groups which perceive the division of public and private self as untenable on cultural grounds will gain political ascendance. Her hypothesis opens a new perspective on how fascism works.

Good Read, if interested in 1922-1943 Italy

Berezin is an engaging writer. This summer I did a directed reading which covered 12 books on Italy/ Italian topics 1919-1945. This was by far the best. It is highly engaging book on Fascist spectical which argues for a more complex look on how Italians responded to Fascism. It has good primary sources and is very professionally done, but it is also so smoothly written and engaging I think even non specialist would enjoy this book.

I am an architecture student in Los Angeles and I come across a lot of contemporary, modern aesthetics through research for my studio. I cannot say enough about how valuable Future System's prescence is on the architecture frontier.
These folks are not just producing interesting work, it is also their magestic, informed attention to new energy technologies and their benefits to architecture that embosses Future System's unique vision. I appreciate what they are out there producing and how this work is supported with sensible concepts and mind-liberating theorems.
If you are at all concerned with the impact of environmental conditions/limitations on culture, technological ambitions on the front-lines, and sensitizing yourself to these kinds of issues, I'd say this book is A MUST HAVE!

This is the first translation into English of Guicciardini's Dialogue on the Government of Florence. This dialogue presents what is arguably the most searching and comprehensive analysis of the politics of his times.

About the Author
Alison Brown is a Senior Lecturer in the School of City & Regional Planning at Cardiff University, and an urban planning consultant specializing in international planning practice. She is course director for the MSc in International Planning & Development, and has undertaken extensive research and consultancy in the developing world--in Southern and West Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East. She has recently managed a Department for International Development-funded study on street trading and livelihoods on which the book is based.

Raymond Geuss is Lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Cambridge. He has taught widely in Germany and the United States, and has been an editor of the series of Cambridge Texts in the History of Political Thought since its inception. His previous books include The Idea of a Critical Theory (Cambridge, 1981, ISBN 0521 284228), Morality, Culture, and History (Cambridge, 1999, ISBN 0 521 635683), and Public Goods, Private Goods (Princeton, 2001). He has also published a collection of classical verse in his own English translations, Parrots, Poets, and Philosophers & Good Advice (London, 1999).

Quentin Skinner is Barber Beaumont Professor of the Humanities at Queen Mary, University of London. He is a Fellow of the British Academy and the Academia Europaea, and a foreign member of many other learned societies. His scholarship, which is available in more than twenty languages, has won him numerous awards, including the Wolfson Prize for History in 1979 and a Balzan Prize in 2006. His books include The Foundations of Modern Political Thought (2 volumes, 1978), Reason and Rhetoric in the Philosophy of Hobbes (1996), Liberty Before Liberalism (1998), Hobbes and Republican Liberty (2008), Forensic Shakespeare (2014) and a three-volume collection of essays, Visions of Politics (2002).

overlooked but essential political theory reading

Written between 1521-24, the book consists of a dialogue between four leading Florentine citizens in 1494, one of whom defends the old Medici regime and three of whom defend the new republican government (adding pathos to the dialogue is the fact that the main speaker and defender of the Medici regime, Bernardo del Nero, was in fact summarily executed by the new regime in 1497 for involvement with a planned Medici coup).

Part I is a profound (and still relevant) debate on the merits and demerits of both narrow government and republican government. It should be essential reading for anyone doing political theory.

Part II turns to Guicciardini's ideal constitutional arrangement for Florence (still in the form of a dialogue). Constitutional arrangement is an eminently practical topic but one I find laborious reading. There are many excellent and relevant parts in part II but when it comes to how many people should sit on one imaginary council and how many on another, etc., it makes dry reading. Part II, in implicit dialogue with Machiavelli, also defends the model of the Venetian constitution over the Roman constitution.

There are many relevant ideas in the _Dialogue_ but to give a taste of Guicciardini's late Renaissance thought, here is one on the relationship between equality and liberty:

"although the basis of a free city is equality, nonetheless one can't prevent citizens enjoying different status according to their different levels of intelligence, virtue and merit" (115).

About the Author
Paula S. Rothenberg is a Senior Fellow at The Murphy Institute, City University of New York and Professor Emerita at William Patterson University of New Jersey. From 1989 to 2006 she served as Director of The New Jersey Project on Inclusive Scholarship, Curriculum, and Teaching. She is the author of several books including the autobiographical Invisible Privilege: A Memoir about Race, Class, and Gender. With Worth Publishers she has auhored four titles--the best-selling Race, Class, and Gender; White Privilege; Beyond Borders; and her newest title What's the Problem? She is also co-editor of a number of anthologies including Creating and Inclusive College Curriculum: A Teaching Sourcebook from the New Jersey Project and Feminist Frameworks: Alternative Theoretical Accounts of the Relations between Women and Men, one of the first women’s studies texts. Her articles and essays appear in journals and anthologies across the disciplines and have been widely reprinted. Her work was instrumental in the creation of women’s studies and multicultural studies as academic disciplines.

A good primer on whiteness

In White Privilege: Essential Readings on the Other Side of Race, Rothenberg has compiled and reduced some very important and complex discussions on whiteness from a variety of social contexts. In White Privilege, whiteness is traced from it's multiple origins and entry points giving a basic understanding on how whiteness developed as a social construct, what whiteness has meant to numerous people, how various Others have become white, and how whiteness is navigated and construed by people of color.
It should be noted that this is a primer - an entry-level text on whiteness. This book is highly recommended for those seeking a deeper understanding of what whiteness is, what it means, and to some degree what it costs. It's a valuable starting point with numerous references and further readings for those who seek a deeper, richer, understanding of whiteness.

This book helped open my mind to white privilege and racism from a systemic and structural view point that I had not thought of before. I really enjoyed the essays and the readings helped me think of things in a different frame of mind than before.

A Book with a Golden Glow

This book is the tale of an immature young Icelandic man who goes on a journey of more than a thousand miles to southern Europe to restore the rose garden of an ancient monastery. It is a glowing book, the story of a pilgrimage, the story of how this innocently selfish young man becomes a father in more than the biological sense of the word. It is a beautiful book, a rare gem. Its descriptions of Icelandic life and scenery are unusual and fascinating, with the single flower struggling to bloom on the lava flow, and his conversations with the eccentric film-loving monk, and our hero's attempts at cooking, are amusing. On the surface it is a simple tale, but look deeper: there is a lot of Christian imagery. Don't take it at face value, think. The Rosa Candida, the eight petalled true rose, is surely a metaphor for the Virgin Mary, and is the rose garden a metaphor for the Garden of Eden? It is easy to read, and a real page-turner, but don't just rush through it and go on to something else. This book deserves thought and discussion. It is a deeply affecting work of pure brilliance, and I thoroughly recommend it. Read it.

A Glowing Gift from Iceland

Now that it's finally available in English, beautifully translated by Brian FitzGibbon, I got the chance to read The Greenhouse. It's a truly remarkable novel, and its widespread acclaim as the 2010 book of the year was well-deserved.

On the surface it is a first-person narrative that tells the coming of age story of Arnljótur (or "Lobbi"), a 22 year old from Iceland who goes on a journey to find himself. He is a thoughtful boy who studies in the family greenhouse "to be able to read close to the plants" and who thinks about what it might mean to "spend one's entire childhood waiting for a single tree to grow".

His journey takes him from Iceland, which he sees as dominated by moss, tussocks and swamps, to a cliff-top monastery in an intentionally unnamed country that provides a stark contrast to his homeland. We hear him think through his bodily longings, what it means to be a man, fatherhood, faith, death, and our connections with the planet and the plants around us. And beneath all of this there is the question of how we relate to people, and how those relationships make us whole. There is the ever-present memory of Arnljótur's mother and the unforgettable final conversation that he had with her, as well as his evolving closeness to his daughter, Flóra Sól.

Olafsdottir makes liberal use of symbolism, and most significantly there is the precious Rosa Candida, the violet-red, thorn-less, eight-petaled rose.

Richness also comes from Olafsdottir's beautifully drawn minor characters. She captures monastic life wonderfully; in the absence of sustained contact with a broader community the small details of daily routines and of relationships mean so much to the monks. The villagers also are simple yet colorful. And there is Arnljótur's father, about whom you learn a lot from this one line: "When he's finished asking me about the weather and the traffic conditions on the roads, he tells me that seven depressions have crossed the country in about as many days."

Arnljótur emerges as an everyman with whom we can identify, and I hope that we will see more from Audur Ava Olafsdottir.

Touching and beautifully written

What a wonderful introduction to this author! Narrated by "Lobbi" as he is affectionately called by his father, this is the story of a young man's search for himself and for meaning in life. After a tragic loss, Lobbi becomes fixated on the body and on death. He follows his passion for gardening to tend to a famous, but now neglected and overrun, rose garden at an unnamed monastery somewhere in Europe. Lobbi leaves behind, in Iceland, his infant daughter Flora Sol, the product of a one-night stand. When the mother of his child brings her to him, he is suddenly faced with the life-changing consequences of his one night of carelessness, and must discover what it means to become a father.

The translation of the novel is very well done. The writing is luminous and captivating and several themes are explored: the meaning of life, death, coincidence vs. fate. There is rich symbolism. This is a novel that one can get lost in; it is not terribly plot focused and it's really more about the journey than the destination. Reading it was sort of like taking a train ride through beautiful country-- with each page you could just savor the moment and the lovely writing. Lobbi's character is quite compelling, human and believable. As another reviewer noted, the story is somewhat slow at first, but as his character develops and deepens, you'll be rewarded for sticking with the story. The growing bond of this reluctant young father with his child is tenderly portrayed. This was a thoughtful and touching story well-deserving of the praise it has received.

About the Author

Robert B. Cialdini is Regents’ Professor of Psychology and Marketing at Arizona State University, where he has also been named W. P. Carey Distinguished Professor of Marketing. He is the recipient of the Distinguished Scientific Achievement Award of the Society for Consumer Psychology, the Donald T. Good guide to the tactics of persuasion.

Right away, buyers should know that Cialdini has produced a less-expensive version of this book. "Influence: Science and Practice" is designed as a textbook for classroom instruction. So, it has things like chapter summaries and questions that can be assigned as homework. However, the other book "Influence: the psychology of persuasion," is designed for a more general audience. The content is basically the same, but it omits the classroom-oriented layout. It's also cheaper. If you are a student who is buying textbooks online, this is probably what you (or rather, your professors) want. If not, get the other one.

Both books focus on persuasive tactics. This is not a theoretical work trying to lay out a strategy of communication, like "Getting to Yes." This is a toolkit, designed to give the reader a selection of tools for specific circumstances. That is not to say that Cialdini lacks an understanding of more strategic thinking, just that it isn't the focus here.

The underlying theory is that people tend to be hardwired to respond to certain stimuli in predictable ways. The book tells you what those stimuli are, that is, how to push people's buttons. And it does a very good job, which is why Cialdini has demand for two versions of the same book.

I'm not going to list all of the tactics because the table of contents does that and, because they're detailed, they're difficult to understand without reading the book. But, they all have some basis in science and their effectiveness is empirically demonstrable, so you can trust that they work. The best part of this book, for me, was becoming more conscious of how others, including politicians, advertisers, and bosses, try to manipulate me. Cialdini deserves respect just for opening people's eyes, but he goes a step further by explaining ways to deal with the constant manipulation that is inherent in human communication.

The only problems I see are that the textbook version (this one) has a better index in the editions I compared, so it makes a better reference tool and that the book is written from an American cultural perspective. That's fine, as most of his audience is American, but, and this is my M.A. in Int'l Relations talking, I wonder how well some of these tactics would be recieved by people from other cultural backgrounds. In particular, notions of authority (which constitute a chapter) vary widely. Just a heads up. This is still a "must read" for people who want to know how to persuade or protect themselves against other's persuasion.

Great book with ideas that anyone can benefit from.

This was a great book. I come from a technical background, and as most people know engineers are horrible at influencing others. But this book taught me a lot of simple ideas that are applicable in helping to motivate others to my point of view and also how to recognize when others are using these techniques and how to defend against them.

The book has 6 different concepts and it goes into the psychology of each (at a high level), some examples of it, and a few testimonials from readers. It was a quick read and held my attention throughout.

As a side note, in case you are comparing editions. The "Influence Science and Practice" seems to be the most recent version. The "Influence psychology of persuasion" book looks like the same book with an earlier copyright. Skimming through the chapters of both they look like the exact same text, so you probably don't need both.

Incredibly Influential, Powerful, and Useful!

"Influence" by Robert Cialdini is one of the most wonderful and influential books I've ever read! Other books have been written on the topic, but Cialdini's is the best and most influential of them all.

"Influence" deals with the study of persuasion, compliance, and change - a subject that has application for every area of life. Cialdini presents the latest research on influence in a compelling way, clearly stating the 6 principles of influence and providing wonderful illustrations of each principle from advertising, psychology and other fields. If we understood these 6 principles better, we would be less subject to manipulation from others (for example, the manipulation to buy things we don't need or to buy more than we need). We might, in turn, also be able to understand how to influence others for good.

The 6 principles of influence are:

1. The Rule of Reciprocation: "We should try to repay in kind what another person has provided us."

2. Commitment and Consistency: "Once we make a choice or take a stand, we will encounter personal and interpersonal pressures to behave consistently with that commitment."

3. Social Proof: "We determine what is correct by finding out what other people think is correct."

4. Liking: "We most prefer to say yes to the requests of people we know and like."

5. Authority - we have a deep-seated sense of duty to authority

6. Scarcity - something is more valuable when it is less available

I find that in my own life, these 6 principles are remarkably powerful and have the ability to explain a lot of the behavior I observe as a father, teacher, and priest. We would all benefit from memorizing and mastering these six principles. They are simple but extremely powerful. My daughter read this book when she was 14 or 15, and I had to wrestle with her to get it back because she loved it so much! I only hope she doesn't begin using the principles against me!

One of the best parts of the book is the wonderful examples of each principle that Cialdini provides. An experiment to demonstrate the principle of authority, conducted by Stanley Milgram, is the classic example. In this experiment, two volunteers show up to help with an experiment, purportedly to test the effect of punishment on learning and memory. A researcher in a lab coat with a clipboard explains the experiment to the volunteers and that one is to take the role of the Teacher, who will administer increasingly higher levels of electric shock to the other volunteer, the Learner. Every time the Learner got a question incorrect, the Teacher was to administer a higher level of shock. However, the real experiment was to test how willing the Teacher was to administer pain to the innocent Learner, who was not really another volunteer but an actor pretending to be in increasing stages of pain. The results shocked everyone, for Milgram discovered that about two-thirds of the subjects were willing to administer the highest level of electric shock. The reason? Their deep-seated duty to authority.

Influence is filled with many such fascinating and useful examples of how our lives are influenced by others. I highly recommend the book to all readers, for influence is something common to us all, for good or for evil.
