Nice handy book

This book offers a fine compilation of Charles Correa's housing projects (who I AM SURE did not apprentice with Louis Kahn). Correa has achieved his status as an international architect of relevance in two ways: one, through his rich vocabulary of images and ideas as employed in the various cultural centres like the Jawahar Kala Kendra; two, by his concern for shelter and his attempt to reconcile communitarian needs within the growing shortage of space. The book is about the latter. In a Corbusian way, the houses are micro-urban laboratories to be replicated and used in larger schemes. Sometimes they reflect his ability to inject a poetic sensibility even in the most banal of projects. Many of the projects and drawings of his houses, housing schemes, and urban proposals have been published elsewhere, but some delightful new houses, seem to throw his postmodern work volte-face and return to an invigorating rigorous modernism. It is time to to focus on the unfulfilled socialist agenda of the Modern Movement which seems to have been always Correa's goal in his role as an architect not only of elite institutions but the most important public institution -- housing. More architects should take note of Correa's experiments, and this book provides a wide range of both evocative and sensible designs.

The complete Age of Apocalypse book 3 collects the real meat of the story. Magneto and his X-Men have all gone their separate ways and now we begin to see each of their individual stories, Nightcrawler's journey to the savage land, Gambit's to the Shi'ar galaxy, Rogue and the Astonishing X-Men head to stop the cullings, ect.

We start to get some of the background of some of the new characters in this volume, such as Sunfire's past. We also get to see where the rest of Marvel's heroes have been in X-Universe.

Age of Apocalypse was one of Marvel's most successful story arcs and in this volume we can see why. It includes some of marvel's top artist today, Adam Kubert (Ultimate X-Men), Chris Bachalo (X-Men), Joe Madureira (Ultimates 3), and Salvador Larroca (The New Universe) as well as some of the top writers Warren Ellis (Ultimate Galactus), Jeph Loeb (Ultimates 3,4), and Fabian Nicieza (Cable and Deadpool). Compelling story picks up right where volume 2 left off

If you enjoyed Vol. 2 of this series, you'll enjoy this one just as much. It continues the stories started in the previous volume and continues bringing them toward their conclusion in Vol. 4. I didn't care much for the X-Man stories, and the Weapon X story seems like something that might have just as easily taken place in the mainstream universe with a few small tweaks, but it was still a good read if you are a fan of the character.

You'll also get the first glimpse of the AoA versions other Marvel heroes and villains in this one, including the Fantastic Four, Daredevil, Hulk, Iron Man and others.

this is a the 2nd half of the set and it's better to get this larger version than the little books. These books are full of pics and descriptions. There's a spin .. a little towards the left.. but like most of these types of humanity type courses you're going to get that anyway.

I purchased this and the 2010 edition; there are virtually no changes, so I'm returning the over-priced 2010 edition....$5-ish for this one, or $125-ish for the new one? I'm just fine with the $5 book.

Amy is a poor little rich girl married to Dr. Cade Hollister, who takes her in hand. His motivation tactics include spanking, medical exams, anal play and erotic sex. He wants her to be the best she can be including finishing school and growing up. This awesome well written book is part of a boxed set but each story is a stand alone full length book. Whenever I see Natasha Knights name on a book, I grab it because I know I will love it. I've neve been disappointed. Bravo Natasha.

'I have never met Richard Holmes, but I am deeply jealous of him for Redcoat opens with the re-enactment of a Napoleonic battle that I wish I had written myself... The redcoat and his family were never appreciated, but Richard Holmes has written them a marvellous memorial. Redcoat is a wonderful book, full of anecdote and good sense. Celebrated military historian and television presenter Richard Holmes is famous for his BBC series 'Rebels and Redcoats: The American Revolutionary War'; 'Wellington: The Iron Duke'; 'Battlefields'; 'War Walks' and 'The Western Front'. He is the author of many bestselling and widely acclaimed books including 'Firing Line', 'The Western Front', 'Sahib' and 'Tommy' '. He is general editor of the definitive 'Oxford Companion to Military History'. He taught military history at Sandhurst for many years and is now Professor of Military and Security Studies at Cranfield University and the Royal Military College of Science. A sociology of the British soldier 1700-1860

Professor Holmes has written a thematic sociological history of the British redcoated soldier in the age of the Brown Bess musket, i.e from the time of the First Hanoverian kings to the Crimean War, with a focus on their experiences during the main conflicts, i.e the American Revolution, the Napoleonic Wars, the Crimea and the Indian Mutiny. It is built as a narrative. The style is very fluid and the text is full of quotes and anecdotes, it is well structured in chapters on specific themes.
It covers:
-the nature of warfare in Europe and the colonies
-weapons and their effect on tactics, injuries and casualties
-recruitment, command and discipline
-attitude under fire and towards the enemy
-life in barracks and on the march
-differences in social origins, ethics, prospects and lifestyle between officers and enlisted men and their families

It gives specific treatment to the subjects of infantry, cavalry, artillery, specialist services, siege warfare. It is a book on the military culture of the times in all its aspects rather than on "events".

All in all a very readable and informative study. Fans of Professor Holmes or John Keegan will not be disappointed.

This book tells the history of the British Soldiers from about 1760 to the beginning of World War I.. It is history written at it best, and reads more like a novel than a history book. It is well worth a read even if you are not a history buff.

A broad canvas

This must be the slowest reading experience I remember, taking at least six months to finish the book. The endless historical details presented can indeed be exhausting to go through -- the banners, the uniforms, the hierarchical details and so on -- but the author also paints a vivid picture of the army lost forgotten. There is no narrative as such, just themes in a loose order. So it does not matter if one forgets something from the earlier chapters while proceeding.

All in all, this is a convincing example of a meticulous, even fastidious scholarship about the sociology of British warfare and military in eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The author really has endless amounts of knowledge of his subject -- and his enthusiasm shines trough. Maybe the only thing really lacking is some grand historical or political perspective to the army that made it possible for Great Britain to rule half the globe for a reasonably long time. Richard Holmes never comes to this. He takes the past as it comes, in a form of a large canvas crammed with minute details. In this respect the book really resembles those traditional battle field paintings: You can see the gore and the glory in a truly romantic AND realistic light. There is, however, no artistic or philosophical message within -- apart from the heroic, dramatic surface realism. The author is not interpreting history, just describing it realistically and analytically from a point of view that he has a special affinity with.

All in all, Redcoat was worth reading, as the age of blazing muskets and bloody bayonets, galloping dragoons and round shots hissing in the grass now have a cinematic quality for the persistent reader. But this effect is created without any tricks. Holmes brings forth real stuff, not make-believe.
