About the Author
Amy Haimerl is a professor of journalism at Michigan State University and covers small business and urban policy for Fortune, Reuters and the New York Times. She was the entrepreneurship editor at Crain's Detroit Business, where she covered the city's historic bankruptcy trial. She is an alum of Fortune Small Business, CNNMoney and USAA Magazine, as well as a former Knight-Wallace Fellow at the University of Michigan. She lives in Detroit with her husband, Karl; two pitbulls, Maddie and Beaubien; and stray cat, Jack, who is the boss of everyone.

Excellent read

An easy and honest read about the joys and challenges of investing in one of Detroit's many storied but neglected homes, and the power of strong communities. As we live in Ann Arbor, we were able to visit Matilda (she looks great!) and see for ourselves what West Village is becoming. Its former glory is palpable, and its resurgence evident in the new businesses, neighbors chatting on porches, and rehab of homes. Kudos to Amy and Karl for taking a risk and seeing what Matilda and the neighborhood could be. If you go to West Village, you must stop by Craft Works, one of the neighborhood restaurants. Delicious and fun!

A fascinating adventure

I'm very interested in restoring old homes to their original glory so I was interested in reading about Amy's experience. But the book is more than just about the restoration; it's about Detroit and the people and assimilating into the the fabric of a neighborhood that's been beaten down and is very slowly on the rise.

I found Amy Haimerl's memoir to be a hilarious, touching and thoughtful tribute to the power of daring and acting on the courage of her conviction. Her book also offers perceptive insights into the history and present condition on the conundrum of Detroit, a city both maligned and misunderstood. Detroit Hustle was that rare book that made me want to stand up and cheer.

Book about the art of growing plants without soil.

I planted a lot of herbs and hung them by the kitchen window. Herbs are quite difficult to grow and maintain because they are too sensitive. I always have to be careful every time I water them because too little or too much water could harm their growth. Though it was not mentioned that hydroponic method can also be applied to herbs, the DIY Hydroponic Window Garden system is something I know I can do and will be very beneficial to my plants. This book gave me good information about hydroponics and its basics, however, a few illustrations could have made it a little more helpful especially for people who does not have any idea about unconventional gardening. The art of hydroponics is very interesting, if this gardening system interests you, you will be able to learn more about it using this book.

This really satisfied my interest in starting hydroponics.

Wow, so this is an interesting topic. I'm a very amateur gardener and I only have one plant: a peace lily. What drew me to this topic is that I heard hydroponics can be used indoors. Much to my satisfaction, the author shows that this can succeed in urban apartments, which is my exact situation! She gives various DIY methods on how to start hydroponics. Coupled with this is a lot of background information into the history and benefits of the hobby. In some cases, I wish the author went more in depth. For example, she mentions that we can deter spider mites with a cayenne pepper spray solution, yet she doesn't go into how to make it. Overall this was a satisfying introduction into hydroponics. I would highly suggest pictures to be included with the instructions though.

Wow, this is great! This is the first time I have learned about this way to grow a plant and I am so happy I encountered this book. I've always been fascinated with the idea of gardening but I just don't have any space for it. Now with this new knowledge, I can grow plants even in the small limited spaces of my home.

The instructions on how to set this up are very detailed and I really appreciate that the author suggested different fruits and vegetables that can and cannot grow in a Hydroponic Garden. This would be very helpful for beginners like me who would like to try Hydroponic Gardening and be successful the first time around. Try out this new method of gardening and you might develop a new hobby that will be worthy of your time.

Almost everyone appreciates the importance of customer satisfaction in business, but this book takes that idea to two extremes. First, it claims that customer satisfaction is more important than any business criterion except profits. Second, it argues that customer satisfaction is best measured by one simple question, "Would you recommend this business to a friend?" Pressure for financial performance tempts executives to seek "bad profits," that is, profits obtained at the expense of frustrating or disappointing customers. Such profits inflate short-term financial results, Reichheld writes, but kill longer-term growth. Only relentless focus on customer satisfaction can generate "good profits." One unambiguous question, with answers delivered promptly, can force organizational change, he claims. Reichheld makes a strong rhetorical case for his ideas, but is weaker on supporting evidence. The negative examples he gives are either well-known failures or generic entities like "monopolies," "cell phone service providers" and "cable companies." When presenting statistics on poor performers, the names are omitted "for obvious reasons." On the other hand, the positive examples are named, but described in unrealistically perfect terms. NPS, finally a customer service score I can use

The Ultimate Question is compelling to read. Alright, so I listened to it. Then I went out and bought five more copies for the senior people on my team. This question (and the supporting elements) have already begun to ripple out and have an impact upon our organization. Would you refer us to your friend or family member? It places accountability upon the person being asked at a completely different level. Talk about amping it up.

The second, and in many way more important element, is tracking this effort with the same level of dilligence and seriousness of your accounting or financials. Actually making this a metric you track with results that work their way toward forecasted revenue is huge. It justifies the effort of trying to track it in the first place.

And of course at the end of the day we get to delight our customers which is why most of us started our businesses in the first place. We're learning what we can do better and reacting to it more quickly...probably because we respect the NPS system more than we ever did our customer satisfaction surveys.

I can only imagine how our organization and our work product will be over the long term.

Best way to measure customer satisfaction levels!

This is the best book I have ever seen in terms of providing the simplest way to measure the satisfaction level of a customer. Not only does the ultimate question provide that, it also is quick/easy for clients to complete. That is also important. There is lots of data to support the effectiveness of the ultimate question, which adds to its credibility. I have successfully used this methodology in our business and have received good feedback.

Net Promoter is misleading and potentially dangerous

Frederick Reichheld's latest effort to enlighten CEOs and other business leaders is at its best mildly entertaining, but at its worst it is misleading and could result is some very costly and wrong decisions by potential users.

There are several critical weaknesses of this work-I will only mention a few.

First, there are many contradictions, reversals and logical inconsistencies throughout the book. Examples abound and can be discovered by anyone who spends a modicum of time with the book. Among the biggest is the reinterpretation of the satisfaction measure used by Enterprise Rental Car as a measure of net promoters (p.63). This is very confusing because earlier in the book the reader is led to believe that one needs to measure "recommendation" not "satisfaction" because Mr. Reichheld alleges that satisfaction is unrelated to revenue or profit growth. So why does the satisfaction measure works for Enterprise? More astounding Mr. Reichheld continually uses the Enterprise case throughout the book as justification for using the NPS measure.

Second, the entire premise of the Net Promoter approach is unsupported by third party peer-reviewed research articles in psychology, marketing research, or social science journals. All of the support provided in the book is based upon Mr. Reichheld's claims of research conducted by the firms he works with (Bain and Satmetrix) none of which has been reported in the aforementioned scientific publishing outlets. In fairness, the Net Promoter idea was originally promoted in a Harvard Business Review article, but HBR is not a research journal and its articles are not peer reviewed. Publication in HBR is somewhat equivalent to publication in Business Week or Fortune, and certainly does not qualify as scientific review.

Third, Mr. Reichheld confuses cause and effect with correlation. Recommendation is an effect not a cause. It occurs because something else (like a satisfactory experience) causes it to occur. Yet throughout the book, Mr. Reichheld continuously claims that recommendation's correlation with sales growth proves that it is a driver of growth. Correlation is simply a measure of association that says nothing about cause and effect. Consider the correlation between the number of churches in a community and beer sales. They are probably correlated but does one cause the other? More likely there is a third factor that is causing both to move together-like population growth. The same is true of the Net Promoter measure-it is likely being caused by something else-like satisfaction. Its correlation with sales growth is spurious and is not causal. If one examines the evidence provided by Mr. Reichheld in Appendix A this confusion of cause and effect is even more apparent-in every case shown, the time periods for the sales data predates the time periods when the Net Promoter Scores were collected. So what is causing what?

Fourth, the recommendation measure advocated by Mr. Reichheld is not a measure of "word-of-mouth" despite his claims to the contrary. Anyone who spends a nanosecond reading the question can see an obvious flaw in the interpretation of the measure. Reichheld's recommendation scale is basically a "unidirectional" scale-the scale is bounded by a positive (+) position (the "extremely likely" label) and a neutral (0) position (the "not at all" label) not a negative position. Nevertheless he interprets the scale as though it was actually measuring recommendation in a bi-directional manner by assuming that those who answer 0-6 are "detractors" who will spread negative "word-of-mouth" comments to others-but do they? Perhaps some of the respondents are detractors who answer at the lower end of the scale because there is nowhere else for them to answer, but it is also likely that some are truly advocates, just not extreme advocates. Mr. Reichheld claims this is a logical interpretation of what respondents mean-but is it true?

One final point concerns the claimed accuracy of the Net Promoter measure. In his classification of respondents Mr. Reichheld basically rescales an 11 point scale (0-10) into a three point scale (-1, 0, +1). By doing this the information content of the measure is reduced. The net effect of this, as any elementary statistics student can tell you, is that your confidence intervals are increased and your statistical power is reduced dramatically. This means that if the hapless reader of this book were to use the Net Promoter measure to assess the true value of their customer base they would be unable to detect any changes that would occur in an accurate way. For instance for a sample of about 750 customers, a user of the Net Promoter measure would be able to detect a %5 increase less than 10% of the time. A decision maker contemplating million dollar investments would do better by flipping a coin than relying upon a measure with these kinds of properties.

Excellent third part

I really enjoyed the first two parts of this trilogy, and the third part totally lives up to the rest. Arthur isn't the usual romantic hero of the Middle Ages, he's a hard, somewhat brutish Romano-British soldier, and he's a secret pagan who needs to recruit a Christian army. There's great historical detail in these books, fine research and a fast pace. It's good entertainment for the price of a cup of coffee!

I fell in "like" with Arthur, the man, in parts 1 and 2. I'm now in love with him. Where's this kind of guy when you go on a blind date?! Tough but kind and decent underneath it all, emotional but brainy and courageous. Once again, the story is a sweeping, fascinating panorama of history. The army maneuvers and fighting had me breathing heavy; the cast of characters should be transplanted to a TV series. Ian McShane as Arthur? OMG!

The author knocks the final part of his trilogy outta the park. Or should we properly say, sails a towering six over the pavilion?! Once again, Bannister revs up his recipe of blood, guts, political and military machinations, darkness and deceit, conniving characters, crafty collusion, noblemen and noble endeavors. Love the cast, the setting and the outcome. What's next, milord? Perge meos diem!

Krissi Dallas is a gray-eyed Aerodorian who lives in Texas with her husband, Sam, and their two Yorkies. Krissi teaches junior high Advanced English and enjoys working with and serving alongside the teenagers at Fusion Student Ministries. More adventures on the White Island

Windfall is book two of the Phantom Island series by Krissi Dallas. It picks up right where Windchaser left off. Whitnee Terradora and her friends are marooned on the mysterious White Island with Hot Island Boy (Gabriel) serving as their protector and guide. Everyone on the island, including Gabriel, seems to be keeping a host of secrets that not only frustrate but possibly endanger Whitnee and her friends. At the end of Windchaser, the group from the Mainland Beyond (aka our world) is visiting the village of Aerodora, home of those who are gifted with the life force of Wind. While there, they meet the Guardian of the island and hear of a prophecy that may or may not involve Whitnee in some way. From Aerodora they set out on a tour of the other villages: Geodora (home of the Earth-loving Geodorians), Hydrodora (watery dwelling place of the Water people) and Pyradora (nestled right up to a volcano - the ideal spot for any Pyra). They meet new friends, encounter suspicious characters, deal with danger, and play with all sorts of interesting powers. Oh and did I mention a little romance? Perhaps involving a Hot Island Boy? (wink wink)

Windfall moves very quickly. The first book told most of Whitnee's backstory and got the main characters to the White Island; the second book is where (almost) all the fun happens. I loved the rich detail that Ms. Dallas poured into the sights, sounds, and smells of the tribal villages, especially Geodora. I found myself really wishing I could sit down to a Geodorian feast with beautiful flowers on my head and around my neck, the way Whitnee and her friends did. Yum! The last half rushes a bit as events plunge headlong toward the dramatic and emotional climax. I think while I was reading a few chapters I almost forgot to breathe. Definitely recommended for anyone who enjoyed Windchaser, as well as all fans of young adult fiction and fantasy.

Ready to be back on the Island!

What I Liked: 1) The setting. I love the Island. If I could choose any place I've ever visited in a book to live, Phantom Island would be my choice. I may have said that during my Windchaser review, because I felt the same way while reading Windchaser. In Windfall, we to explore the Island even more. We visit the Geodorian lands, the Hydrodorian lands, and the Palladium. *fingers crossed that at some point we get to visit the Pyras in their native lands!* I've also heard, or maybe I dreamed it, that in the next book we'll be getting a map of the White Island. That would be awesome, because the one I drew for myself just doesn't cut it. 2) Gabriel. We got much better acquainted with Gabriel in Windfall. He is in my top five book boyfriends. Hot island guy, a bit of an attitude, with a hidden sensitive side? What girl doesn't want that? I love Caleb too, don't get me wrong. I have a sneaking suspicion that we are leading into a Team Caleb vs. Team Gabriel scenario. Sorry Caleb, I've got to go Team Gabriel all the way. I mean, in my imagination, he never wears a shirt. Ever. 3) The characters. We got to know most of the non-island characters pretty well in Windchaser, but you learn more intimate details about their lives in Windfall. If it's possible, they become even more real. Especially the two younger members of the Traveling party, Amelia and Kevin. 4) The antagonist! One thing I'll say about Windchaser is that there is no clear antagonist. In Windfall, you learn without a doubt who the antagonist is. We're not entirely sure why he/she is the antagonist, though there are some hints. It's nice to know who the common enemy is, and not having to be suspicious of everyone Whitnee and her friends meet while traveling the Island. 5) The ending. There is a big surprise at the end, that made me gasp and then smile with pleasure. If hot island boy abs don't do it for ya, know that the ending holds the promise of a great surprise.

What I Didn't Like: The only complaint I have is impatience. I'm too impatient to get back to the Island, waiting until Spring is nearly torturous.

Overall thoughts: One of the most creative books I've ever read, Windfall is a masterful study in imagery and character development. I love the characters, the wonderful setting, and the exciting plot. The story is so beautifully painted that it enables your imagination to easily bring it to life. Make sure to add the Phantom Island books to your TBR list if they aren't there yet.

Amazing!

In this book Whitnee, Caleb, Morgan, Kevin, and Amelia finally finish their journey......but not quite as hoped. Some people that we thought were good turned out to be the exact opposite. But with that this question comes up again. Will Whitnee's father ever be found? Will he come back to the Mainland? These questions that we for sure thought would be answered no, might actually be closer to a yes than we think. However nothing is free. Will Whitnee be willing to make extreme sacrifices in order to get her dad back? Who is the really enemy? Will Whitnee decide which boy she wants to be with? Buy this book to find out!

Krissi Dallas is an amazing author (as well as a teacher if I do say so myself.) I have no complaints about this book. It is worth your money FOR SURE!
