This is Temple Grandin's most practical and generous work yet. She offers so very much of herself and her real life experiences. Kate Duffy's compassion, empathy and positive attitude pervade the very fiber of this book. The guidelines and suggestions are clear, creative and useful in real-life application. The many specific examples of real people with AS in their careers are invaluable, especially to the AS population. While the book was written for people with AS, it is an essential work for anyone who cares for, teaches, employs or works with someone on the spectrum. About the Author
TEMPLE GRANDIN, Ph.D., is an animal scientist who designs livestock-handling facilities worldwide and is an assistant professor of animal sciences at Colorado State University. A frequent lecturer on autism, she is the author of Emergence: Labeled Autistic, Thinking in Pictures and other publications.

KATE DUFFY has owned her own writing business for 16 years in addition to working as a writing and business instructor.

As a parent of an Asperger teen, this book was confirming and enlightening

As a parent of a teenager with Aspergers, alot of Ms. Gradin's recommendations confirmed what I already thought: sell the skills not the personality, go into areas where your interests/fixations lie and consider working as a consultant in your area of expertise. Finding recommendations I already thought of didn't make me feel like those parts of the book were a waste. On the contrary, it is nice to have affirmation from an outside source, particularly one intimately knowledgable of autism.

Other recommendations she makes were new to me. I had not thought of them, but they make alot of sense. She encourages people to go out and interview people in their field of choice to learn what they can about the industry. For neurotypical people, this would be akin to networking. For autistics, it is couched in a manner far easier for them to manage. People on the autism spectrum are probably not going to be good at social networking. But they would be very good at the interviews she recommends. She takes classic job networking and reworks it into research. I know my son LOVES researching more information on his interests, but digs in his heels at the thought of socializing.

Ms. Gradin also discusses the different styles of learning/thinking and which jobs are good for those type of people. My son happens to have amazing visual spatial abilities and is currently taking CAD in high school where he is getting straight A's. He now wants to become an architect which is exactly one of the fields Ms. Gradin reommends for visual spatial people on the spectrum.

Other beneficial feature of the book are the list of sources for information, examples of people in a wide selection of fields and Temple Gradin's personal observances.

I'm greatful to Ms. Gradin for writing books on autism. As hard as I try to understand my son, the fact that my brain is wired differently then his means I will always approach him with a bias, unintentional or otherwise. Her books clarify and explain things I could ponder for years and still not quite grasp.

I would also highly recommend her Animals In Translation book.

A carefully written and documented treatise on practical methods to nurture, acquire and maintain employment of individuals with ASD (Autistic Spectrum Disorders) and especial reference to those having Asperger's Syndrome, i.e., a high or higher-functioning level of autism either with or without specific talents. The authors have particular first-hand knowledge of ASD by either being affected or children with autistic traits.

So, yes, this is a "how to" book that should prove to be an important informational guide on structuring realistic avenues that can lead to eventual employment in the workforce, clearly pointing out the need for early intervention (parents), focusing on development of talents into marketable skills and managing the environmental and social factors that may be devastating to those potentially employable ASDs using mentors whenever possible.

The writers have skillfully outlined the many basic problems encountered in ASD together with mitigating means to overcome such difficulties. In ASD there is a neurological disability which often is manifest via magnitude, separation, and response of the various sense modalities (touch, taste, sound, visual). This imbalance and admixture or crossing-over of sensory modalities is associated with frustrations, anger, withdrawal, and distraction from mild stimuli such as fluorescent light flickering, roughness of clothing, strong scents and includes avoidance of eye contact, crowds, and careless grooming, etc. Using "white noise", gum chewing, exercise, soft clothing, incandescent bulbs, tinted glasses, "counting to 10" and counseling can do wonders. Using networking, hobbies, portfolio creation, and focusing on improving enjoyed skills can lead to successful employment.

The appendix briefly covers the ADA of 1990 and many available resources. Authors point out many of the computer nerds or geeks are believed to have Asperger, that many have exceptional skills to contribute to society as a whole, the caveat being that their societal integration faces many pitfalls which can be avoided or cushioned, and these are succinctly spelled out in this manual. With statistics revealing that upwards of 1 in 166 children are currently diagnosed with ASD, it is a certainty you will undoubtedly encounter many of them in the schools, workplace, gatherings, and etc., ergo this guide is helpful for all.

I notice more kids with Aspergers and want to stop their parents to recommend this author and these books. Gives answers, perspectives and concrete suggestions for people who have this syndrome. As adults there is so much we can do to help kids progress, we just need to understand it first. These books do that.

I will rate this book 5 stars when my nephew reads it and has his "aaah" moment".

About the Author
Nancy Nici Mare received an MA in Applied Linguistics from CUNY Queens College, where she is an instructor at the English Language Institute. In addition to teaching all ESL skills, including reading, writing, speaking and listening, to students ranging from beginners to advanced, she has also served as a master teacher to many students in the practicum class in the MA Applied Linguistics program at QC. Recently, she developed an online advanced ESL writing course, which she subsequently taught to students in Vietnam. She is one of the two authors of the Reading for Today series that includes Themes, Insights, Issues, Concepts and Topics.

Lorraine C. Smith has taught ESL for over 30 years. She has also taught TESOL Methods and Research courses at the graduate level. She has presented for 20 years at local, national, and international TESOL conferences. She holds Masters degrees in Linguistics and in TESOL, and earned her doctorate in Curriculum and Teaching at Teachers College Columbia University. In addition to coauthoring the Reading for Today series, she has written other ESL textbooks, journal articles and book chapters. She is currently the Associate Director of the English Language Institute at Queens College of the City University of New York.

Solid Reader for Upper Level ESL Classes

I used this text in an advanced ESL community college class. The texts are high interest and include appropriately challenging vocabulary, reading and writing/conversation extension exercises. My only complaint would be the length; I wish it had a few more chapters. Also the cost is a bit high, given the slim size of the text. Otherwise, I highly recommend it.

Terrific book for EL students

I purchased this book to use in an advanced English learners classroom. I'm pleased with the layout and content. Each chapter has a reading based on a theme. There are pre-reading, skimming, and paraphrasing exercises, sections for dictionary using skills, word forms, short essay questions, a quiz, and more. It's an appropriate level for my class, and we will get a lot of use out of the exercises. It arrived quickly from the seller and in great condition.

Kirkus Review: When you're writing a review, 'speechless' can be a bit of a hindrance. So, I'm gonna work on that, find my words, and try to tell you about this book.

I fully admit, as I have a few times before, that the cover for Monstress is what drew me in and convinced me to purchase the book. The art deco background elements are so incredibly detailed and rich, reminding me a bit of my recent trip to Kansas city for WorldCon, where the downtown area is filled with art deco designs and buildings. There are hints in that background image - or maybe they're flavors? - of ancient mythology, perhaps Egyptian with the golden eye staring back at you - or something quite darker? And then there's the figure of Maika Halfwolf looking over her shoulder in a very manga-inspired character style yet covered in those same art deco elements climbing up her white robe or dress.

I was doomed. Doomed to be unable to walk away from this book. Clever cover artist.

A couple posts ago, I talked about White Sands from Brandon Sanderson; an epic fantasy with a wide-sweeping scale. Monstress is no less epic in breadth and wonder, and, if it were published as a novel, would be the kind that doubles as a step-stool or spider-squasher. In a word: huge.

In Monstress, Majorie Liu has created something truly worthy of the word 'epic'. Following in the wake of a war between humans and Arcanics, we follow the one-armed Maika Halfwolf, a teenager filled with an anger she can't control nor truly fathom. She is on a quest to learn the truth about her past, her mother's life, and the final moments of the war between the races when a weapon of mass destruction went off killing everyone for fifty miles, forcing a ceasefire and a bit of a cold war. She allows herself to be taken captive and sold as a slave to the Cumea, a sort of scientific guild who experiment on Arcanic's like Maika. Not all Arcanics look 'normal' as Maika does, many share traits or forms with animals - fox tails, fur, etc.

Maika has a power she doesn't understand and cannot control. It seems to only appear when she's in mortal danger, and she counts on it now to save her before the Cumea can use her the way they have so many other Arcanics.

This is a dark world and full of danger, intrigue, and machinations. Maika discovers the past is not exactly as she remembered or understood it to be. Some see her as a monster, others as something to be used, and just about everyone wants to destroy her.

There's so much going on in this book, and much of it compressed into the first thirty or so pages as we're introduced to this world and its inhabitants. I admit having to go back and forth a bit to keep up with it all. Liu has developed a complicated and engaging world and filled it with a diverse cast of characters. The Arcanics come in all shapes and sizes and appear to be inspired by the mythologies of the world, including China and Japan. The Cumea - who are also called witches throughout the book - appear to draw their inspiration from archetypal evildoers from not just mythology, but also pop culture, manga, and anime. They have that over-the-top evil quality I'd expect from those sources. All in all, it meshes well the various cultures and styles - East and West - into a cohesive story that hooked me from the start.

The art - a lot of times the cover art doesn't necessarily represent the interior pages. Much to my delight, co-creator and artist Sana Takeda maintains the quality of the art from cover to cover. Page after page reflect the same style, detail, and density as that gorgeous cover.

Liu also uses the story to shed a light on racism, war, and gender roles - all in a fantastic way that pushes the reader to question assumptions and the status quo.

This is the kind of book you read and reread because there's always some new bit to discover hidden in the art or the dialogue. Highly recommend.--Patrick Hester

I'm writing this for the sheer beauty of this novel.

Let me start this by saying I have never written a review on this site I actually cared to write, only out of respect for the vendors themselves. I'm writing this for the sheer beauty of this novel. My mother had lived in Japan and raised me with a lot of eastern principles and background, but in America. I love both western and eastern graphic novels. Ive never found something that so fully meshed what I love about both. The plot is lavish and fantastical, but is lacking a lot of the eastern slant towards fetishized sexuality and brash comedy (think manga's common x'd eyes and oversized heads, etc.). What is there is there purposefully. This story is beautiful, developed,intelligent, new, and just honestly unexpected. The book itself is higher quality than anything ive purchased in years. As an avid reader and writer, the book itself is important to me. The joy of feeling the pulp of the page disappeared as publishers stopped paying the money for the good paper. This book is three times the length of the average single volume western graphic novel and the pages are thick and strong, you can't help but give attention to it. It was the first thing I noticed. Where i had lost hope for the fantasy/scifi/steampunk genres in recent years as artists/authors got lazy and drew/wrote what we already knew, this is beautifully original and intricate. And it's 8 dollars. What. I dont even have words for that.

The pictures are absolutely beautiful, the first thing that grabbed my attention is ...

The pictures are absolutely beautiful, the first thing that grabbed my attention is that it would be a shame if i just read it for the story, and skimmed through the pictures just to see the action happening. So I decided to buy it in paperback format, after having read the digital version. The detail in almost all of the pictures is astonishing, even the second time reading it, it still shocks me.
The story so far is more world-building and personal background revealing than a grand epic, but I can feel it rapidly moving in that direction. The characters are complex, I can't deny that. The antagonists get as much attention as the protagonist and crew, and I really appreciate it. You also can't blame the book for token female characters, because they kick ass, and they do not share the worst common aspect of action books and movies, which would be a manly character in a female body.
All in all, the story does not feel like a fantasy cliché even with all the familiar motiffs in it, and none of it feels forced*, and I haven't noticed any glaring plotholes either. So far I favor this comic even over the famous traditional superhero ones.

*An interesting article revealed that the writer intentionally makes a point of having a majority female cast, because most media only includes a few, sometimes poorly written, female token characters. This time around, girls take the lead. Contrary to the impression this article gave me, it entirely feels natural to have a female protagonist (there was a solid 50% chance of that), and a female covenant as antagonists (there was way more than 50% chance of that in a matriarchal society), and the male characters are not exactly bumbling idiots either; they really pull their own weight.

A deeply complex dark fantasy tale where the artwork is luxuriant and the story is a slow delicate build of gradual revelations

Written by Marjorie Liu (X-23, Black Widow) and illustrated by Sana Takeda (X-23, Ms. Marvel), Monstress stands distinctly apart from the usual sword & sorcery dark fantasy comic, starting with the fact that most of the main characters are female as are most of the powers that be. But this is no simplistic or heavy-handed feminist take on the genre - it's done very subtly and naturally so that we simply accept that this is the way this world is, nothing more, nothing less. The artwork is vivid and detailed and gives the world of Monstress a very different look and feel, as well as an unrelenting atmosphere of foreboding and danger. And the story progresses slowly and carefully, building the world little by little as we see and experience it through the characters, leaving the reader with a number of questions and mysteries that are only gradually revealed.

It helps to know that the world of Monstress is inhabited by five known races:

(1) Humans, who cannot perform magic, though some women are born with mental powers that seem like magic. Among humans there is a religious order called the Cumaea who seek out such children and compel them to join their order. Refusal is not an option.
(2) The Ancients, immortal beings who resemble humans but have the heads and tails of animals and who can perform powerful magics. The Ancients are divided into two rival courts: the Dusk Court and the Dawn Court. Think a number of Egyptians gods and you get the picture.
(3) The Cats, magical beings distinguished from ordinary cats by their ability to speak, to perform magic and by their multiple tails. More tails reflect more power, status and age.
(4) The Old Gods, an ancient race of evil, powerful and destructive beings, not remotely human in appearance, supposedly gone from the world but fear of them still lingers.
(5) The Arcanic Halfbreeds, a hybrid race originally resulting from matings of Ancients and humans, inheriting varying traits and powers from both. Some can pass for human, their animal-like traits either not visible or suppressed, but most are marked by one or more animal traits: eyes, ears, tails, even wings.

The central character of Monstress is a seventeen-year-old girl named Maika Halfwolf, an Arcanic who can fully pass for human, in spite of the fact that her left fore-arm is missing. And the strange eye-like tattoo on her chest. The book begins with her being put up for bids at a slave auction. This is her story.

A clear-headed and clearly written examination of the pros and cons of different ways for generating electricity

Almost everyone has an opinion on energy policy and what method(s) for producing electricity should be promoted in this country. And most of those opinions are half-baked. TRAVELING THE POWER LINE won't make you an expert, but it will make you better informed. And, hence, it will make you a better citizen.

Julianne Couch is a journalist. At the time she researched this book, she was teaching at the University of Wyoming and living in Laramie, Wyoming. Her starting point was concern for the ecological condition of the planet, as reflected in her efforts in her personal life to conserve energy and reduce her carbon footprint, although she wasn't rabid about it. Curious to know more, she researched and wrote TRAVELING THE POWER LINE.

Couch investigates nine different ways of producing electricity: wind farm; coal-fired generation; nuclear; natural gas; biomass; geothermal; hydroelectric; solar-thermal power; and tidal power. Believing that seeing enhances understanding, she visited a facility engaged in each form of electrical generation: from a near-by wind farm in Wyoming to a nuclear plant in Nebraska to a geothermal plant in Utah to an experimental project in easternmost Maine to use underwater currents (principally tidal currents) to generate electricity. The result is a readable -- and instructive -- book.

Each of the chapters is about twenty-five pages long. They are not highly technical. By and large, Couch takes the reader along with her as she investigates each form of electricity-generation, and the reader hears what Couch hears from plant operators, public interest advocates, and independent experts. By and large, Couch refrains from advocating one form of power generation vis-a-vis another, although the underlying bias is towards reducing greenhouse gases without crippling industry and the economy.

The lessons are that one cannot look at any form of electrical generation in the abstract, that no one form is the be-all and end-all, that one must also consider distribution and patterns of consumption, and that in evaluating the economic and ecological efficiency of any proposal for a new electrical generation facility there always are a multitude of factors to consider (down to whether certain species of animals - for example, the sage grouse - will be listed as endangered). Along the way, Couch exposes some of the commonplaces and shibboleths of contemporary public debate as falsehoods, or at least unhelpful overgeneralizations.

Couch's prose is not brilliant, like that of her journalistic hero John McPhee. Sometimes it is even a tad pedestrian. And there are a few instances in which an edit (or a stronger one) would have been useful - such as when she "putted along" [should be "puttered"] U.S. 30 at sixty miles per hour. But her writing is lucid, and the book never bogs down in details. If anything, the reader comes away wanting to know more - and with this subject, that's a good thing.

Tell the reader the fascinating story of power delivery from plant to home. Visit sites across the nation. Speak clearly.
Alas, little of this perks through the political moraine of 'alt energy' and disaster reflections.
We are unknowing recipients of extreme energy efficiencies because of the grid (great book, Grid, by the way) and the invisible workers who maintain it.
This work does little to demonstrate awareness or authority.
