What to look for, not what to do.

Before anyone gets defensive, I think Mike Holmes is one of the greatest living humans on Earth. I love his shows and magazine. I thought I'd love this book- but I was very disappointed.

I guess I expected more. If you are a hands-off homeowner (or future homeowner) who is buying a house or considering hiring a contrator to do a job on your house, this book is for you! This book will help you identify potential problems with your structure or with the people you intend to hire. Mike recommends certain materials and lets you know what to look out for.

Though, that's it. If you watch the show, you already know most of this. But I'm not the kind of guy who farms this stuff out. I do it myself- framing, plumbing, electrical, drywall, whatever. I'm certainly not a professional and I'm sure I'm not "doing it (completely) right." I was hoping that this book would show me how to make it right. For example, I'm re-doing my bathroom. There's little to nothing about venting the drain pipes. Yeah, it says that if you have xyz problem, there's an issue with venting. But it doesn't tell you the proper way to vent anything- just to call a pro.

Sorry, Mike. Teach me how to do it, not how to pay someone to do it!

good overview of how to design and contractor selection - not DIY

I like Holmes TV shows, so i got this book. this is well written overview of the things to look for in contracting the remodel - i was more interested in the DIY details, but it's not Holmes fault that he wrote the book that he wanted to write rather than the one i wanted to read. Even though it's short on DIY details, it's still an interesting read.

Well-written introduction to MHD

Focusing on the physics of fluid flow, electromagnetics and their interactions, Davidson has written a very clear text which serves as an excellent introduction to this subject. He includes the mathematical formulations, but does not dwell on the exact solutions of the governing equations. Instead he spends most of the book using scaling analysis and approximate solutions to elucidate the physical mechanisms behind EM-driven flows. Davidson should also be commended for his concentration on MHD flows of engineering interest, particularly metallurgical applications (my field of research), although he does not neglect geological and stellar applications.

The author should also be praised for his clear writing style, which is easy to read without dumbing down the subject. Davidson has provided a model for other scientists and engineers who aspire to write texts: it is possible to write a useful and illuminating textbook in a readable style.

This book is highly recommended for anyone with knowledge of either fluid mechanics or EM as a way to learn the basics of the other field and their interactions.

Excellent introduction to physics behind the MHD equations

If you want a really well written explanation of what is a physical meaning of the MHD equations, what are the fundamental ideas behind them with examples from solar spots to metallurgical applications, nicely and clearly illustrated, this is the book for you.

Splendid Introduction

A well written book linking to applications well. Not incredibly heavy on the math, but only suited to those fluent with the entire calculus series. I particularly enjoyed the examples from many fields. For awhile we dwell on the geodynamo then off to propulsion then off into metallurgy. I agree: Congratulations to the author on such a well organized volume!

About the Author
'The Physicist' is F Todd Baker. He received AB and MA degrees from Miami University and a PhD degree from the University of Michigan. His area of research is nuclear physics and he has published more than 70 articles in refereed journals as well as made numerous presentations at conferences and workshops. He has more than 35 years of college and university teaching experience. In 2006 he retired from the University of Georgia where he taught and performed nuclear physics research for 32 years. Previously he held a postdoctoral research associate position at Rutgers University and teaching positions at Carroll College (Wisconsin) and St Lawrence University. He now lives in Athens, Georgia with his wife Sara in a 100-year-old house mainly restored by him and decorated and landscaped by her. He has four beloved children aged 18-45 years. He enjoys bicycling around town, playing violin, cooking and baking, outdoor activities, DIY projects, film, music of many genres, working puzzles, reading mainly European murder mysteries, and hanging out in coffee houses.

Best review book out there

I'm a derm resident reviewing for my boards and I found this book. What a blessing!!! This is Hands down the best derm review book out there today. The topics are brief, major points are highlighted and all of the important topics for the derm boards are covered. There is even a review of surgery and cosmetic dermatology. There are lots of lists and pnemonics that are easy to learn and the author has found a brilliant way to summarize all of this information in about 370 pages. I would highly recommend this book for any derm resident studying for their boards, or for any healthcare professional interested in dermatology. This is a must Have resource for learning dermatology.

This is a wonderful book to supplement your studying for the derm boards. Very high yield and covers all subjects well. The best part is the wonderful color photographs! A great addition and general review book for derm residents.

Great Outline

This is NOT comprehensive. It is a great overview of tons, but NOT all topics. Any Dermatology resident should be able to quickly pick up on this, along with comparison to his/her main text of comprehensive study (whether it be Andrew's and/or Bolognia). Example -- one will need to add the dyschromatosis/hypomelanosis differential to even begin making this more complete. There are many others, which you will find, and by writing them in you will reinforce your knowledge! With that said, this is a gem of an OUTLINE. There is much space for filling in needed minutia, adding topics, drawing in tables, and so on.

Sincerely, highly recommend!

Corny but comprehensive!

Standing out with the irreverently snappy title, "Get Your ACT Together: The Fabulous Guide to the ACT," Applerouth presents its first ACT textbook with a bang. The bright cover features bold colors and smiling Scooby Doo-like cartoon characters. Is it all just a little too cute? Maybe. Is the book any good? Surprisingly perhaps, but yes!

Now that the ACT has surpassed the SAT in absolute number of test takers as more and more states are using it as a graduation requirement or for other standardized assessments, it's high time for the publication of more and better ACT study resources. Until now, students have been limited to the usual suspects - The Princeton Review, Kaplan and Barrons - and the test maker's "The Real ACT Prep Guide." Unlike the College Board's "Official SAT Study Guide" with ten real tests for practice, the ACT people only offer five practice tests. Like the College Board though, the makers of the ACT offer no more than a few pages of instruction in their book, which means that serious students will have to supplement it with a real textbook to guide them in test-taking techniques.

Applerouth seems intent in blowing the roof off the staid and scary atmosphere that infuses most test prep guides. Staid because the material is dry and boring. Scary because, well, these tests count a lot in competitive college admissions. Applerouth's textbook has BIG type, lots of silly cartoon illustrations, corny mnemonic tools to remember key points, and a lot of excess white space. For some, the approach may seem juvenile and the silliness may be off-putting. At its heart, however, is an excellent teaching tool.

The book is organized by test subject: English grammar and rhetorical skills, Math topics, Reading, Science and Essay. Each one consists of a comprehensive approach to the knowledge base needed for the test and, most importantly, techniques to approach the questions. In the reading section, for example, the text introduces "the Sparrow" with a large cartoon of a bird representing the simple, unflashy answer and how to spot it. In the very time-pressured Science section, Applerouth walks students through the techniques of putting your finger on the graph as you find it mentioned in the question, with question and passage texts highlighted and grayed out to demonstrate the reading and skimming process. It's almost like having a tutor by your side to advise you. As a test prep tutor of many years' experience, I was surprised and gratified to see that Applerouth uses many of my favorite techniques, too, and shows students very clearly how to approach the passages and the questions. There are helpful arrows and explanations to all the lesson questions, and smart reminders in the margins, comparable to Barrons' and The Princeton Review's, but much more fun, and thus, memorable.

The book has its flaws, too. For more advanced students, it is probably too basic. Students already scoring above 30 in Math or Science should check out The Princeton Review's "Math and Science Workout for the ACT" or Barron's "ACT Math and Science Workbook." And unlike The Princeton Review, Applerouth does not offer explanations to the answers in the practice tests. Furthermore, this expensive book ($29.95 on Amazon, compared to $13.59 for The Princeton Review's ACT textbook) has only two full practice tests, while The Princeton Review gives two in the textbook plus one extra online and Barron's has three in the book, itself. As a first edition, there are quite a few typos and other annoying errors. Most egregiously, the book inaccurately touts "A World of Online Support" on its inside cover. There is actually no online support at all. Applerouth says they are planning all that, but the promised "More fabulous materials" do not exist; the link on the textbook cover leads to a page promoting their tutoring services. It amounts to shoddy, deceptive advertising and is a major failing on the publisher's part.

On balance, though, this is a fun textbook and for those who don't mind spending a little more, a useful tool in ACT prep that will help most students raise their scores. I'm a convert: I've chucked my old favorite, The Princeton Review, and have now adopted this book as the new companion to "The Real ACT Prep Guide" for my ACT students in New York and around the world. So far, everyone likes it, finds the material engaging, and is picking up points as a result.

Detailed, yes, but the best resource for the linguistics student

I bought this book (plus the other two in the series: Volumes 1-3) for a very challenging linguistics class at UC Santa Barbara. The professor teaches a fast-paced and difficult 10-week course covering the entire English-speaking world, including the variations of English spoken in South Africa, India, Kenya, Jamaica, and pidgin varieties in Africa, Hawaii, and Asia. For the British Isles alone, we covered at least 10 accents. Though I initially found this book difficult, toward the end of the course I began to see it as an extremely reliable and helpful reference. Wells is outstanding at identifying and explaining historical developments in English, such as the FLEECE merger, the FOOT/STRUT split, and the evolution of the PRICE lexical set. He explains these developments in a way that provided a sort of foundation that helped me to "get" the material. The professor seemed to think that simple memorization was enough, but I found that Wells' approach was superior.

Most linguistic textbooks seem unnecessarily detailed. The problem is that writing about linguistics requires a standardized way of representing sounds in print. Once I got used to Wells' way of doing it, I found him easier to understand than, say, the Atlas of North American English. Also, Wells' grasp of what is going on in the British Isles is superior to other references.

The other problem with the field of linguistics (this is me editorializing) is that as a subject it is fun. In order to carve out a reputation as an "expert," or to justify a high rate of pay, linguists must take some of the fun out of it and turn it into something rigorous and difficult. Or at the very least they must create a difficult sub-specialty within the field that only they can excel in. This is rather tiring, needless to say. I found Wells' style to be less concerned with this type of posturing than other academic sources. I got an "A" in the course, and the bit of extra reading I did in the Wells books was instrumental.

Accents and dialectology can be pursued as a gigantic sequence of unrelated facts. Wells knows his facts, all right, probably better than anyone else, but what really distinguishes this book (the first of a three-volume series) is how Wells rigorously integrates his facts into a systematic pattern, based on the history of the English dialects and their descent from a common ancestor. He also covers synchrony--the linguistic system of the individual at any given time--with great insight.
A delight to study and consult, for any professional linguist or serious amateur. ....

An absolutely fundamental book in any study of the phonology of English. What is unique about Wells is that he systematically covers _all_ the different accents of English found in the world. Most other works focus either on North America or Southern England, with everything else treated as an afterthought at best. Wells shows how the historical differences in accents came about, and will give the reader a far more complete understanding of the how, the when, and the what of differences between different accents.
