Kindergarten-Grade 4–King Humpty Dumpty surrounds his world with a fence, thereby separating his colorful kingdom from the dim, dusty domain of the peasants. He spends his days smelling the flowers, enjoying the songs of birds, eating elegant meals, admiring artwork (paintings of himself), and reading by the light of the setting sun reflecting off diamonds. When a curious peasant peeks over the fence, the enraged king fires all of his staff and begins building a higher barrier out of heavy stones. However, the pampered monarch is unused to such work and has a terrible fall, landing on the other side of the wall. The peasants bury him with little fanfare, and the book concludes with the traditional nursery rhyme. Delessert's gray-and-brown peasants resemble the whimsical mice and rabbitlike creatures in A Was an Apple Pie (Creative Editions, 2005). Humpty has an egg-shaped head with a large protruding nose and wears a golden half-circle crown. The surreal landscape is embellished with realistic-looking birds and flowers. The illustrations are the real strength of the book. Unfortunately, this interpretation of Humpty Dumpty is too bleak and heavy-handed and lacks child appeal.–Robin L. About the Author
Etienne Delessert was born in 1941 in Switzerland. For more than thirty years the self-taught artist has been translating his and the world’s ideas, passions, fantasies, and nightmares into the visual language of books, magazine illustrations, posters, animated films, paintings, and sculptures. His imaginary creatures and landscapes juxtapose chaos and order, the familiar and the fantastic, the serious and the joyous, to clarify this world and create new and surprising universes. Delessert has illustrated more than eighty books, including collaborations with avant-garde playwright Eugene Ionesco and renowned psychologist Jean Piaget. His internationally acclaimed books have been translated into more than fifteen languages and have garnered numerous awards and distinctions, including ten gold medals from the American Society of Illustrators. He lives in Connecticut with his wife, designer Rita Marshall, and their son Adrien.

Delessert's illustrations are, of course, bright and whimsical and delightful. I bought this book for my granddaughter. When she came to see me recently, we went to an exhibit of Delessert's illustrations for his children's books. I wanted her to read some of the books before we went, so she could "meet" Delessert before seeing the exhibit. She loved the books and was totally enchanted with the exhibit, reading each book on display beside the original illustrations. Not only are the drawings bright and appealing, but Delessert makes of Humpty a story of selfishness set against gentle graciousness.

Visual Tone Poem

This is a great little book on a great American artist. Campbell stitches together so many disciplines, it's really worth taking some time to comprehend how the pieces fit together. His intuitive use of color often puts together impossible seeming combinations, but in the end they work to great effect. The amorphic forms shared by his paintings and sculptures are equally surprising, and ultimately expressive. Mastery of color, space and form, that about covers it. A timeless artist for our time.

my husband is obsessed and loves this book and artist. The artwork is different and very inventive and beautiful. My hubby made sure to make it to Thomas Campbell's book signing to have him sign all his books by him.

About the Author
John Cheever, best known for his short stories dealing with upper-middle-class suburban life, was born in Quincy, Massachusetts, in 1912. Cheever published his first short story at the age of seventeen. He was the recipient of a 1951 Guggenheim Fellowship and winner of a National Book Award for The Wapshot Chronicle in 1958, the 1979 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for The Stories of John Cheever, the National Book Critics Circle Award, and an American Book Award. He died in 1982, at the age of seventy.

oh what a good start to reading john cheever

This book is only a 100 pages and their is so much in a few words. "She was as women go relatively punctual and He had come to believe that punctuality in engagements was an infallible gauge of sexual spontaneity. He had observed that,without exception, women who were tardy for dinner engagements were unconsciously delayed in their erotic transports and that women who were early for lunch or dinner would sometimes climax in the taxi on the way home." IF you like that passage you will enjoy this book. Read more John Cheever.

Poignant, Beautiful, Truthful ... a bit Preachy

This is lovely Cheever. So few pages, and yet so much substance. A book of great truths told through small details. Understanding the difference between those who would or wouldn't stop to pick blackberries on the shoulder of a massive interstate highway ...

I would often pause and reread a paragraph - amazed that something so insightful could be so relatively insignificant within the context of the story. I thoroughly enjoyed myself in this read of an old man, feuding neighbors, love, dissapointment, insecurity, greed ... and American life.

It's not my place to be glad for Cheever, but I felt a sense of satisfaction for him - for the fact that he got this wonderful work done before he died.

My only critique is that the environmentalist message gets a little too preachy and loses the subtlety a message embedded in a novel should have. Mind you - I have no issue with the message - only with the way it is presented towards the end of the story. But like his main character - Cheever was an old man with a purpose. And if he was desperate for his cause - such that he stepped slightly over the line between fiction and nonfiction ... well for that he should be forgiven.

A worthwhile read, which I read on a rainy evening as suggested. It is now 2:00 am, and the book is back on my shelf. I am only saddened that Cheever left no more stories after this one.

A finely crafted novel by an American master.

Oh, What A Paradise It Seems is John Cheever's last novel, published just before his death in June 1982. It differs from his previous works, which mainly focused on suburban commuters, as it tells the story of an older man, but it still retains Cheever's wit and surrealness. The astonishing thing about this book is how deep the story goes, and yet it is only 100 pages long. It would take other authors 400 pages to write this story. It is, as the first sentence says, "A story to be read in bed in an old house on a rainy night."

Questions and conversations every educator should be talking about

Heidi Hayes Jacobs neither pulls punches nor minces words in the opening of her 2010 book Curriculum 21: Essential Education for a Changing World, or her talk at this year's ASCD Conference in San Francisco. She begins, "What year are you preparing your students for? 1973? 1995?" I could feel a virtual finger alternately pointing at me and another wagging in disapproval.

I've been interested in the future of public education for ages. Working with the Center for Teaching Quality and the Teacher Leaders Network this past year and a half has added fuel to my fire. Punctuated through our group discussions about teacher retention, training, and retention has been the idea that public education is standing at the edge of a epoch, the end of over a century of analog teaching and the dawn of an age of digital learning. I actively sought out Jacobs book, and I was taken aback by the tone I assumed lay behind that opening question.

I felt a sense of guilt and shame that presumed what an honest answer from me must be. Even as I work to update and digitize my students' learning experiences and environments, I know I am still moving at a snails pace. I can only imagine what some of my less-forward-looking colleagues might offer Jacobs as an answer, "I preparing my students for 20go-f&%k-yourself!"

If other readers are turned off by the opening question, I hope they will persevere like I did, because Curriculum 21 is asking exactly the right questions all educators should be asking themselves and one another as we navigate this period of education reform and reinvention. In chapter three, Jacobs puts these questions two ways, "What content should be kept? What content should be cut? What content should be created," or, "What is essential and timeless? What is not essential or dated? What should be created that is evident and necessary?"

These are important questions, and Jacobs is in good company when she asks them. Sir Ken Robinson states in his RSAnimate video that is currently sweeping though school districts, "Some people say we have to raise standards as if this were a break thorough... Why would you lower them?" In his book, Out of Our Minds, he goes into more detail. "In place of a reasoned debate about the strategies that are needed to face these extraordinary changes," he writes, "there is an insistent mantra that we must raise traditional academic standards. These standards were designed for older times and for other purposes." He continues later with, "The essential problem is that many governments and organizations seem to think that the best way to prepare for the future is to do better what we did in the past - just do more of it and to a higher standard. The fact is we have to do something else." Additionally, when Milton Chen, the former director of Edutopia, wrote about the six leading edges in education in his book, Education Nation, he purposely excludes a supposed "Higher-standard-of-what-we've-always-done edge." On the cover of Linda Darling-Hammond, The Flat World and Education, the child is working on a laptop, not a scantron test.

Jacobs offers concrete steps for developing a 21st century curriculum or, more likely, of reinventing current curriculum using her three essential questions to drive curricular evolution. She would like to see schools, districts, and states use her well-developed curricular mapping system to ask these questions. One such way to map curriculum is vertically, asking, "What will a well-educated child know and be able to do when s/he is finished with this school or grade." Vertical mapping takes all content areas into consideration. Alternately, schools can map horizontally, asking questions like, "What are historians writing about? What are scientists discovering? What mediums are writers and artists using? What problems are mathematicians grappling with?" These questions open the door to a content team asking the three big questions about curriculum: What should stay? What should go? What needs to be created?

Jacobs offers some suggestions about what to add and what to let go in social studies, English, World Language, Math, Art, and Science. She writes explicitly that teachers may disagree with her; she is fine with that, saying, "...that is precisely the point - to encourage an active inquiry as opposed to passive acceptance of content."

But her real punch is to imagine a school of the future, she states, "We need new forms for schools rather than school reform." Jacobs asks educators to look at four categories that have dominate school as it has always been done: Long and short term scheduling, Student groupings, Adult groupings, and Space.

Long and Short Term Scheduling. Without resorting to the phrase, "Because that's how we do it," try to answer these questions: Why is the school year 180 days long? Why is a school day 6-7 hours? Why do we break up our learning time into 45-55 minute blocks? Why is a school career 12 years long? Now, the fun part is asking these questions and dreaming up a little public-education sci-fi...

What would a school career look like that really supported student learning? Would students be able to graduate in only 10 years? Would we have room for children who needed 14 or 15 years? How would children tell us they are ready to graduate if we can no longer count on their birthdays to mark the passage of grades?

What would a school day look like that really supported student learning? Would every have to be there at the same time? Would they really have to take 5-6 equal-length courses each day? Could early birds learn at 5AM? Could night owls learn at 8 PM?

Student Groupings. Schooling is the only institution where a person's manufacture date determines who they work with. "Good morning Ms. Jones. Welcome to Oracle! Now, I see on your employment paperwork that you were born in 1971. So... that will put you into our "39 department." Ridiculous, right? Why are we so afraid of mixed age grouping on our classes? Music and art teachers can show us how it's done; they've been organizing based on skill for years, using labels like "Beginning," "Intermediate," and "Advanced." A freshman can enroll in the "Advanced" music class if she shows the teachers she has the chops for it.

Adult Groupings. Here is a place where many schools are already moving on Jacob's ideas. Progressive secondary school are realizing that department meetings are far less useful than a meeting of the cross-curriculum teachers who share a cohort of students. The shared-student team can talk about the strengths and needs of their children and divide up the work of providing intervention, encouragement, or stretch activities. Curriculum Departments are still important, but their work of curriculum design and alignment should get done in longer, less frequent meetings. The opposite is true in elementary school, where vertical teams of teachers who will facilitate a child's learning have a lot more to say to one another that the cohort of 2nd grade teachers. Sure those 2nd grade teachers have work to collaborate on, but like secondary departments, those meetings require more time and less frequency.

Space. Here, Jacobs isn't just talking about virtual space. On-line learning is leading a complex existence in 2011. On the one hand, it is being touted and the next great silver bullet of education reform, with virtual schools popping up around the nation. At the same time, most schools and teachers are realizing that the internet is a powerful tool that can be as useful as one wants and is willing to invents time. We could simply replace our robo-phone call announcement with tweets or FaceBook status updates. Lesson plans can be posted on a blog or wiki for absent children to download and complete so they are not too far behind. Students can publish their work on wikis and blogs to allow for a greater audience for their products that just their teacher. Forward-thinking schools can use FaceBook and blogs to allow for students to collaborate on their projects with one another, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. These same tools can be used to collaborate with other students around the world, or with experts in the fields that the children are researching.

Some educational futurists believe that the era of physical schools is coming to a close. I don't buy this. I have a hard time imagining when the socialization job of schools and the day-care role of schools are no longer needed. I agree with Jacobs that the physical spaces of classrooms are going to change over the next 10-20 years. If "collaborations" really becomes recognized as a critical skill, then rows of individual student desks may have outlived their usefulness.

Not What I was expecting

I had the opportunity to see Heidi Hayes-Jacobs speak earlier this summer, so I was excited to read her book. While there was interesting content, it wasn't what I thought it would be. Several of the chapters were contributions from other authors (shame on me for not looking more closely before I purchased the book), and I didn't have much interest in some of the topics. I was also hoping for more practical classroom strategies that I could implement even with the constraints of a traditional classroom, but much of the book was about wholesale change in schools - something that simply isn't going to happen overnight. I did find the ideas intriguing and agree with much of what was written; it's just that I was expecting something different from what I got.

If you're looking for a book that makes you think this is a great one. It is a very thought provoking book on preparing students for 21 century learning. It really emphasizes a need to teach students for the future world and prepare students for jobs that may not even exist. This was used as a textbook in one of my masters courses and was one I really enjoyed reading.

Best Introduction

There are two negative things to be said of this textbook: I had trouble putting it down, reading well into the night; and, I wanted more.

For those entering the field of explosive engineering, this is an excellant first text. Having learned about shock waves from texts and reports written by those who created the field of explosive engineering, it was a task to learn on my own. Paul Cooper has written a book that makes the subject seem so simple and understandable I wonder why I had so much difficulty understanding these basics. This can only be explained by this text having been written by someone who knows the subject intimately, and has tremendous skills as a wordsmith. It is also obvious that Paul Cooper has put considerable of effort into this work, not letting it be published until it was truely ready.

It is well worth the price, and will be as great a value to the savant as to the neophyte in this field. An excellant predecessor to Paul Cooper's "Explosives Engineering."

Excellent First Book on Explosives and Propellants

Excellent starter which covers the chemistry, burning mechanics, shock mechanics and scaling laws. The book does contain quite a bit of material on practical concerns such as example devices, storage, facilities and operations.
Unfortunately, this results in a limited coverage of more advanced concepts, but this is what is to be expected in an introductory book. It is not a textbook, so it is very uesful and does not leave the reader hanging on any subject. Paul Cooper's writing style is conversational and clear. The material on propellant burning in this book does not appear in his more advanced book "Explosives Engineering". For the reader new to the field, this book will probably be the best choice.

Dr Zachary Birchmeier is currently an Instructional Technology Support Specialist at Stephens College in Columbia, MO, USA. He received a PhD in Psychology from Miami University in 2004.

Beth Dietz-Uhler is Professor of Psychology at Miami University. Her research interests include intragroup and intergroup behavior, reactions to threats to social identity, sport fans and spectators, and computer-mediated communication.

Garold Stasser is Professor of Psychology at Miami University. His published work has appeared in the Psychological Review, the Review of Personality and Social Psychology, Psychological Inquiry, the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology and Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes. Simply awful...

It's readily apparent the authors were busy in their clinical careers... so much so that they neglected to spend any time proofreading this book. It's a typical "write some random questions and we'll call it a board review book to make ourselves famous" book by physicians. There are numerous wrong answers to simplistic and redundant questions. There are so many wrong answers that, as one reviewer mentioned, they are often easy to spot; however, in the course of 800+ questions, do you really want to have to recheck answers in textbooks and other sources to verify their accuracy? I didn't appreciate it and wished I had known this prior to using this. In spite of this book, I easily passed the pain boards. Final words of advice: 1. Use a different pain review book(but alas, they all have their faults) and 2. You're better off reading a pain textbook and simple MRI book for the pain boards if you have the time.

Screaming piece of garbage

Appalling inaccuracies in many areas. Questions are plain wrong in many areas. I made it 1/10 through the book and found at least 3 wrong answers cited as correct in this text. This thing was clearly not reviewed or edited by anyone academic, and hence can't be trusted. I run a pain medicine lecture program for a fellowship and would never recommend this book.

Full of misinformation

I don't know how someone could go through the trouble of publishing a book without making sure they had their facts straight first. Here are some examples:
1) Baclofen is apparently an alpha 2 agonist
2) Neuropraxia is not a demyelinating condition
3) Horner's syndrome doesn't cause anhydrosis but does manage to cause both mydriasis and miosis.

So far one out of every 8 questions or so is either misleading, poorly worded, or just dead wrong. And it's not just typographical stuff - the explanations themselves actually spell out the author's ignorance.

Reading this book actually made me angry enough to write this review. That's how much I hate it.

About the Author

Richard M. Perloff, Professor of Communication at Cleveland State University, has been on the faculty at Cleveland State since 1979. He has written scholarly textbooks on persuasion, political communication, and the communication of AIDS prevention. Dr. Perloff is a nationally-known expert on the third-person effect, the divergent perceptions of mass media impact on others and the self. From 2003 to 2011, he served as chair and the first director of the School of Communication at Cleveland State. Perloff enjoys teaching undergraduate persuasion, graduate persuasion, and political communication courses at Cleveland State. He is a Fellow of the Midwest Association for Public Opinion Research, writes feature stories for Cleveland weekly newspapers, and has received city and state-wide journalism awards for his work. He lives in Beachwood, Ohio with his family, is an early morning swimmer, and newspaper-with- coffee aficionado.

great overview of theories of persuasion

I have used this book and its previous edition in a graduate-level course in strategic communications. It has been a perennial favorite with my students and I have heard from several who I advise for their theses projects that they refer back to it to refresh their memories on relevant theories of persuasion. I have yet to see a text that covers such a range of theories and that presents them (and their critiques) in such a comprehensive way. An appropriate text for upper-level undergrad or grad courses.

Great book on the basics of persuasion.

This book is easy to read and understand. The concepts are backed up with studies and real-world examples, not too much speculation and theorizing. There is so much thought-provoking material, it really stands out for a textbook. In fact, this is one of the best textbooks I have ever seen.
Want to persuade people in everyday life? This isn't a bad place to start learning about it. You'll get an overview of dozens and dozens of ways to become more persuasive, why they work, and examples of how to use them.

A Wonderful Textbook

I teach a course in social influence at a local university, and this is the textbook that I like to use. Some of my students think it is overly dense, but a textbook isn't supposed to read like a novel. It has a great range of information, and is written from a communications, rather than a psychological, perspective. I find it highly readable and accurate, and love the section on propaganda. I hope a second edition will be available soon.
