AN EXCELLENT BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO OL' FRED!

Deleuze takes Nietzsche's core ideas, repeating them and revealing them many times over--they are profound ideas that may change your life, or at least how you thought of Nietzsche--and leads the reader through Nietzsche's works so that at last a sort of understanding is reached. The book is difficult, true, but if you threw down Foucault or Sartre give this book a chance. Deleuze even translates foreign phrases for you--something even Gasset does not do, and he's an easy read generally, and he evens composes an excellent summary chart of Nietsche's main concepts discussed in the book: this kind of consistent repitition of terribly difficult and challenging concepts makes it much easier for us to stick with it, for as we go along in the book we are constantly coming upon the same lexiconical associations with these concepts that makes them famiiliar, if not easier to grasp. Things you learn about Nietzsche will surprise you--as well as others, when you tell them!

This one started it all

I was putting together my thesis on Nietzsche and, after pouring through the traditional secondary texts, was directed to Deleuze. Roughly twelve years later, I finally felt like I was able to make some sense of the damn thing.

Nietzsche wrote "for those with ears to hear". Deleuze heard and wrote in the same voice. Or, at least, with the same timbre. Brilliant, insightful, powerful, dense, abstract, chock-full of enough neologisms to make Webster blush. This book might be a complete departure from Nietzsche. But that is the point. While many might read closer to the letter of Nietzsche, no-one evokes the spirit. Not even close.

It is one of those ultra-rare literary experiences that challenges you to your utmost limit - never giving you a step of ground, but always hinting (seductively) at the glory at the top of the mountain.

If you read Nietzsche and felt that somehow all of the commentaries were a little "off", a little simplistic, then buy this book and give it a read.

Brilliant.

An outstanding book. Deleuze's reading of Nietzsche is remarkable and for the most part profoundly faithful. Perhaps my only real outright disagreement with Deleuze on Nietzsche is Deleuze's understanding of the Eternal Return. But even then I must follow Derrida and allow Deleuze to "read philosophy in a certain way". Deleuze sets up a lot of his own thought in this, so if you are familiar with Nietzsche and are interested in Deleuze this is a must read.

My wife uses it every day in class. It is well translated and thorough. A bit overpriced compared with the Englush version, (don't see why it has to be more expensive if in Spanish) this drpos a star.

Loved it!

A book with BDSM, pirates and an adventure, how could I resist this?

I've seen this book placed in some retailers as erotic, but I think calling it that does it a disservice. This book is much more than erotica, and while sex does feature heavily, it is more about the relationships and emotional aspects than the physical ones.

Jon is an empath and lives in a run down castle with his stepfather, Reginald, head of the castle guards. Reginald uses Jon's skills on the prisoners in the dungeons to decide who is guilty or innocent. His skills reach the ear of a pirate captain, who decides Jon might just be what he's looking for to keep him one step ahead of the other pirates. For who would try to cheat him if they knew Jon could tell they were lying?

Investigating a murder at the town's brothel, Jon is kidnapped by the pirates and brought on board. Jon doesn't know it, but the reader does, Jon has little choice. Either he joins the pirate band or they kill him, simple as that. It would have been a short book if our hero was murdered in the first few chapters, so the readers can almost guess he'll pick joining the pirates.

I loved this book and I loved Jon. He was an innocent virgin before he joined Captain Baltsaros and his crew, and his confusion over feeling these things for a man was well done, without the book being completely unrealistic. But hey, I'm reading about fantasy pirates, I'm not really worried about realism here :)

As for Baltsaros, for a lot of the book he wasn't a particlularly nice character, but he was a compelling one and I could see how Jon could be drawn to him despite his misgivings at first. Throw in Tom, the jealous first mate and you have the start of an intriguing love triangle and eventual threesome, which I'm not usually a fan off, but it works well for these characters.

All the characters were well-rounded and I adored Katherine, the only woman on the ship who became a sort of older sister to Jon.

Watching Jon blossom from shy virgin into a young man comfortable in his sexuality was wonderful, you almost got to take the journey with him. There is some BDSM in the book, but the scenes are more than just kinky sex, they develop the emotional connection between the characters and the reader gets to see Jon experience sub-space, which a lot of BDSM book just don't do at all or gloss over it. The love scenes are very well-writen (as is the whole book), very sensual and emotionally charged, they sizzle.

There is a good balance of sex, action, mystery, intrigue and jealousy and it makes for a very satisfying read.

If you like your pirates for what they are - rough men who think nothing about murder, kidnapping, stealing, then this might be the book for you. They are also very sexy in here, despite the moral hinterlands they inhabit. A fantastic, sexy read.

Rich and intriguing - Huzzah!

I read this on a flight from DC to Phoenix. I was completely absorbed in it. The characters were rich, mysterious, fallible, and real. No shying away from a bit of controversy and some kinks not perhaps held by all. While this book has BDSM it is not about it at all. No BDSM 101 here. It's all about personalities and circumstances and what happens when you discover what you thought is not what is. There is evil here - and it comes from places perhaps you won't expect. There is redemption of a sorts - there is great drama that hooks you in and just propels you forward. It's not a romance - but it sorta is. I think that's what so cool about it. You delve deep here - in what things people are capable of but it's not overly gritty. Matter of factual more.

It's a great length - bit of swashbuckling and even great female characters who get some "screen time". I'm not usually much for historicals but this is a very meaty book with a lot going on. The writing really shines - very smooth, great structure, and the erotic parts are erotic but this is not even close to too much sex not enough action. There is plenty of both here to satisfy anyone.

Deliciously Erotic & Wonderfully Engaging

I have to say that right from the start "Caged: Love and Treachery on the High Seas" caught my attention with its vivid storytelling, sucking me into the complicated love story that Jon finds himself living as he is caught between two men and the dangerous life that pulls them all together. The story is lush, seductive, erotic, exciting, emotionally charged and incredibly well written. It has a sharp and provocative tone that just makes you feel as if you're taking the journey right alongside Jon as he is twisted, turned and tumbled... in the middle of an epic struggle for love, for possession, for lust and for power. The writing is fast-paced and vibrant with imagery, painting each scene with a fine tipped brush and bringing it to life in a thrilling and alluring way. The novel left me breathless and eager for more, like any good novel should, so I can say with confidence that this was definitely worth the read.

Fabulous Flintlocks

It is hard to imagine how a serious collector of antique British Military firearms could bear to be without this invaluable publication. Ditto for those others with any interest in the history of this subject and period.
Blackmore manages to produce a narrative that is both engaging and informative.
There is plenty of background on the development of the British Military Ordnance system combined with full data on individual weapons , their evolution and how they may be identified.
The work is copiously illustrated with photographs of original weapons held by the Armouries of The Tower of London and includes appendices which identify barrel,lock and stock marks.
The late Mr Blackmore spent 10 years on his researches and his dedication has resulted in the production of a book which has become a standard and invaluable reference point.
Although now out of print, the work merits any inconvenience which the reader may have to suffer to obtain a second hand copy.

About the Author
Abhi Naha is the CEO and Founder of Zone V Ltd which specialises in empowering blind people through mobile devices. Previously he held senior management roles at Powermat and Idem. Idem is a leading mobile handset design house with over one hundred million mobile handsets designed in the market for top tier one handset brands. Prior to that he was a senior manager at a Silicon Valley mobile touch screen and user interface technology provider, Synaptics. He is an ex-Chairman of the UK-based charity Beatbullying, and Vice President and board member of the Communications and Manufacturing Association of India. He has also held advisory roles for Goldman Sachs and Silver Lake in the area of mobile handset user interface technologies. He holds an MBA from Aston Business School and a BSc (Honours) degree in Electronic Engineering from Leicester University.

Peter Whale is Director of Product Management for the Qualcomm subsidiary, Xiam Technologies. During his career in the mobile industry he has created numerous innovative technology products shipped in very high volumes and used by consumers many times a day. At Qualcomm, he leads the conceiving and development of innovative software products, applying machine learning techniques to the fields of device optimisation, content discovery and offer personalisation. These products are deployed by major network operator groups globally and help tens of millions of users each day to find relevant content and enjoy richer mobile experiences. Prior to joining Qualcomm, he held a number of management and technical roles at wireless technology licensing business TTPCom, whose technology shipped in over 100 million GSM handsets. Since 2008 he has led the team delivering the Future of Wireless International Conference, run by Cambridge Wireless, an industry membership organisation of which he is also a board member. He has a degree in computer science, is a member of the British Computer Society and is a chartered engineer.

Not bad, but more marketing oriented

Based on the title of the book, one would assume that the book goes into technical details of mobile handset design. While the book does get technical in certain areas, it keeps much of the discussion at a "high-level". More useful for marketing / product development managers than for engineers.

A valuable insight into the mobile industry!

Essentials of Mobile Handset Design (The Cambridge Wireless Essentials Series)

As a UX professional I found the Essentials of Mobile Handset Design a really enjoyable and insightful read and at times really hard to put down... 'physically'! Having worked within the small screen and mobile design industry for the past 10 years as a UX Designer, I had slight trepidation that I would already know all there is to know about 'my world of mobiles and designing for them'. The authors really do take you on a journey, where I think for the most part, mobile users of today think that mobile phones only really came of age from 2007 with the launch of the iPhone and then 6 months after that with Samsung's alternative offering. Although this changed how we perceive mobiles to function, the journey had started way before then and this book really does cover at pace the story from the first mobile networks to popular devices through the last decade+ and how experiences have had to rapidly adapt with new technology.

I urge to pick this book up and tag along for the ride in which Abhi Naha and Peter Whale so very cleverly immerse you right from the the first page. What I like about the book is that it really does leave you thinking about the future and what it holds it's users and where the industry will move us from here. So whether you're a professional or just interested in anything mobile and want to know more about how the pieces of the mobile telephony puzzle fit together... whether it be from handset technology, mobile design, or to a more grounded perspective from within the industry, you too will also find it hard to put down.

Very good essentials and general overview of the industry

The book excellently explains the process of creating a handset. It gives a great overview of the processes, technology and knowledge that go into the creation of the mobile phone.
Despite technical descriptions of technologies and process methodologies, the book isn't too hard to understand for a layman; a lot of examples with vivid descriptions help with the explanation.
The layout of the chapters helps with the introduction to specific field of handset design: the chapters begin with the introduction, dig deep into different aspects of a mobile phone and ending with a conclusion - giving a great overview of the area.
As someone working in the software design, it gave me broader overview of what it takes to bring a device to life, how it all began and what are the trends that will define the future.
I highly recommend this book to anyone working in the mobile industry or interested in the mobile design.
