Very detailed.

The book really gets into the nuts and bolts of the empires, showing you how ideas could give birth to and help expand the two cultures. But it also shows how the same ideas could hinder and even start to destroy the empires later in their existance. Yet it is not hard to read and even delightful at some points. They answer alot of questions I had about the Aztec and Inca, making sure to support everything they say with lots of details. A must of any history library.

Excelent, well thoughtout arguments

I read this book as part of a research project into the rise and fall of the Mexica, or Aztec. This book offered an interesting view of the Aztec, as a warfaring society which was propelled by a religous zelous that got out of hand and eventually caused the destabilization of a great empire. While I happen to disagree with certain arguments in this book they are all well justified with valid arguments. This field is constantly changing and is full of writers who don't have the background or the backing for their arguments, this is not one of them. Conrad and Demerest use fresh, compelling, and well thoughtout arguments to make an interesting point. If researching the Inca and Aztec this is a must read to achieve a good view of these two expansionist empires.

This book is excellent.

It explains how modern/western thought fails when applied to the cultures of the Aztecs and Incas. This book is good for beginning students for the narrative is easy to follow. However, it is outstanding for the more advanced scholar. This book would make a great companion book to broader studies of these two cultures. The authors criticise modern archaeology for its dogmatic unbending views.The authors also take modern political theory and apply it to these ancient cultures. What happens is that it falls apart. Marx, Hegel, et al have met their match against these ancient ones. What a great departure from the faulty theories of socialism & communism.

Don't even think about it

This is a review of the Audio Book version of this title. Simply put, it stinks. I was a T.A. at univeristy level communications production, and have heard student sound projects with more production value than this audio book. The multiple voices are poorly cast for a husband and wife duo who have arguments that aren't realistic or helpful. He sounds gay, she sounds like a materialistic bimbo. Each time they cut to an interview segment of Nierenberg, there is a constant buzz that is noticable. Poor recordings. If it had been a series of records of Nierenberg speaking, it would have been more informative. Although some of the information was useful, it is few and far between, and the low production value of the cassette takes attention away from that. It is obvious that Nierenberg knows his stuff, but this production was not a great communication tool for him. They may have gotten my dollars, but at least now they won't get yours if you are reading this. Two words: Stay Away!

Win-Win negotiating

The term "Win-Win" has become an every day buzz word. I read Gerard's book nearly thirty years ago when the term was really something new. He actually coined the phrase "Everybody Wins." Virtually the same concept.
His examples are creative and pertain to real life situations. It is good to read a book by someone who has actually been there and done that. His other books are quite informative also. ;-)

Worth wading through the fluff

Although this book suffers a bit from the author's desire to tell lot's of "great deals I did" stories, the non-fluffy content in the book is worth wading through the rest for. There's a good chapter on strategy and tactics. All in all, i'd say about 1/3 to 1/2 of this book is meaningful content.

Value for price

One thing about the PMP exam...it seems like around every corner there is someone trying to capitalize on the certification process. Exorbitantly priced books are the norm in this category, but not this one. Admittedly, I bought this because after spending $500 on the exam registration, I didn't want to drop another $80 on Rita Mulcahy's book or an online exam simulator. For $13, how could I go wrong?

The questions are arranged by PMBOK knowledge area, which is a nice way to test and solidify your understanding after a chapter or section. They range from extremely easy (i.e. choose the correct definition) to some more challenging questions towards the end of each section. I did take exception to a few of the answers provided, but that has always been the case with PMP questions since they are generally "gray area" or more correct/less correct answers. All in all, for $13, this is a good primer and if you feel you need more sample questions, there are plenty of free practice sites out there (OliverLehmann is a good one) that can really test you with extreme difficulty.

FYI - I did get a chance to glance at a copy of Rita's book and noticed that MANY of the questions in this book are very similar or nearly identical to Rita's. That should be a little vote of confidence for this book as Rita is well regarded in the industry. Most importantly, I guess, is that I passed the exam.

Helpful, but could use some work.

l just passed my exam, and will give some credit to this book. The vast majority of the credit goes to Rita's guide, which also includes about 400 practice questions. I did find it very helpful to practice loads of questions just before taking the exam, and this concentrated book of consistent questions gave me a different perspective. I tried a number of the online sites, but found them inconsistent, and rarely explained why answers were correct or incorrect.

All of that said, this book could use a major re-write. The editing was non-existent. There are typos, misspellings and poorly formed sentences all over the place, and it seems to have gotten worse as it went on. Either the editor quit halfway through, the publishing deadline caught the author halfway through self-review or maybe I just became more sensitive to it as time went on. The second main issue is that the answers were often lacking explanations for why something was incorrect, or would just reaffirm that an answer was correct because, well, it was correct. Finally, I felt like there was way more focus on ITTO than what I experienced with my random exam questions. That may or may not be represantitive, but I will admit it freaked me out in my final days of study.

All of that said, I still give this 4 stars because of the price, the general quality of the questions, and that I almost always agreed with the answers. That last one sounds odd, but I have run into online sources and a study guide (not Rita's) that had a number of questions that I could in no way support the answers to.

I found it a good book, covering all areas of PMBOK in a very simple way. Easy to understand. I will recommend it for PMP beginners.

Wow !!! Great read

Amazing, with an ending you won't believe (no spoilers here). Great character development. Amazing battles. Intriguing plot (and sub plot). Science fiction is often criticized by literary-know-it-alls, for being completely plot driven. Although Mr. Wraight must write within certain confines, it his characters that come to the forefront and lead the plot. All of the characters from the first book evolve and new characters weave into the story smoothly. If you loved the first book, the second one will knock you out. I wish the 3rd book was out already.

In general, I liked it. I think I would have preferred it take a little less dramatic attitude at certain events. Especially in times of war, it's hard to see the "oh god what have I done?" cliche.... but overall I thought it was a good read.

I'm going to happily remember the parts I liked and quickly forget everything else.

This is a beautiful book. I bought one on the National Geographic website, and it was double the price for the exact same book. I wish I had ordered from Amazon for the first copy.

This book is awesome! Any one interested in the life of Jesus should own it. It's a big, high-quality, beautifully-produced book filled with photos, maps and drawings. There is interesting background information on the culture and times backed by the latest archaeological research. The authorsgoes through the life of Jesus and his intent is to make you see, feel and smell the sights and sounds of that time. He succeeds in this goal. I highly recommend this book!

I was curious about this book, what with it being a National Geographic publication. I am a fan of National Geographic but, being a Christian, I didn't want Jesus treated as only an historic figure. I don't feel this has been done though.

I usually read reviews, but in this case I found the inside look to be very helpful. I have not read the whole of it yet, but I am certainly learning a lot about the historical time and the art is beautiful.

I am very pleased with this buy.
