Jill Salen is a lecturer in costume, and has been producing patterns of corsets from private and museum collections for many years. She is widely employed in the theatrical costume industry and currently lives in Cardiff.

Historical corset patterns

This is a wonderful book for those interested in Historical Stays and Corsets.
You will not find modern overbusts or underbusts in this book!

Things I love about this book:
clear patterns on graph scale. they are only 1/2 scale so easy to enlarge.
2 doll corset patterns which are full scale.
an 1880-5 child's stay band
18th century stays with side lacing which could have been used for pregnancy.
At least one color photo of each corset
small section on construction

Things that would have made this book totally awesome:
Not switching between the terms "stays" and "corset" for the 18th century. (I hope this was an editors change, not the author's error)
more photos of the back, insides, details!
giving the museum accession numbers for the garments so we could contact the museums for more photos.
Info on adjusting the patterns to fit individual bodies
marking the bust, waist, hip position and measurements on the pattern somewhere for ease of alteration.
More construction information.
a nursing corset or a later maternity corset (but that would be just me)

A wonderful and fascinating resource

As a self-made fashion historian and costumer, this book is tremendous. So far, I have made 2 corsets from this book with great success. The pictures are beautiful and clear, and the patterns themselves are quite self-explanatory. There is also a chapter in the back that details how to make the corsets. So far I have made:

The 1830-1840 Rural Corset;
I would date this corset earlier than the author, as it has extremely similar lines to the 1820's. However, I would say that this is an excellent beginner's corset as the pieces are minimal.

The 1860's Corset (front cover);
I was thrilled with how wonderfully this corset came out. I used strategic boning instead of the cording, and substituted a steel busk for the original wood. It is absolutely beautiful, and I couldn't be more pleased.

I have found scaling the patterns up to be ridiculously easy. I scan them into my computer and then double the size and print using photoshop. Easiest scaling I have ever done.

I plan to make one several more soon. As to sizing, however, I will say that I am tall and thin (5'6" height, 130 lbs, 32D bra). I haven't needed to make many sizing changes to the patterns so far.

My complaints about the book are as follows:

1. The author does not use the term 'stays'. Although using both terms would be confusing to a novice, it would be more accurate. The term 'stays' would have been used instead of 'corset' until the mid-1800's.
2. The author dates the corsets to when they were made, not necessarily in style. For instance, the 'German Austerity Corset' was dated to 1917. This style actually was popular in 1912. I know that may seem nit-picky, but it is very important when trying to duplicate a certain look. There is a huge difference in the styles of 1912 to 1917. I have had to do much more research when trying to make these corsets to find exactly when they would have been worn.
3. The author includes some corsets because they are 'unique'. I would prefer a more standardized pattern since I am in costuming. The 'unique' corsets are interesting, but not very helpful as I would never have a reason to make them.

Other than these small complaints, I have found this book to be wonderful. I look forward to being able to make more of the wonderful patterns!

Is it worth it? (Sewing Edition)

Let me preface this by saying that I am not a costume designer. My intention when obtaining the book was to add some corset making skills from the different time periods to my knowledge base, the additional patterns was a plus. I am highly disappointed in this book however. I also at the moment am not versed enough to talk on whether the corsets were historically accurate or not but I do wish some more history had been given- for example some (Not all) of the corsets have dates but no written section on who wore it and for what occasion

Each Corset contains three sections. 1. a photo of the corset-2.)A written page on the history and materials used on the corset which ranges from 1 paragraph to 5-a picture of half the front and back of the corset is below the written section. 3.) the half scale pattern.

I rated this book low because the con's of the book are truly big ones,they are the meat of the book. The construction section in the back which is 8 pages-will leave the reader unable to make a corset and the construction advise for making a period specific corset from this book-is laughable and pretty much non existent. The book does state the material used in each corset but does not go over the techniques used to achieve the look which are two separate things. In short -You cannot replicate these design solely from this book. I felt like someone gave me a picture,a description of materials used, a half scale pattern and said (Have a whack at it)

The project sections are written-there are no step by step photos.

Cons:
There are no sizes
Historical information is minimal
There is very little technique given on how to accurately make the corsets

Pro's:
Patterns- Which can be either or depending on how many patterns you like, I liked 8 which is a pretty decent number when you calculate how much 8 patterns would be on their own.

I rate this book 2.5 stars as the books is labelled historical patterns and techniques but only delivered on the patterns section.I can see how this book would appeal to an experienced corset maker who just wanted some additional patterns but for everyone else I would definitely recommend renting this from the library and taking some time to truly read and attempt before purchasing this book. In honesty around $25.00 is not that expensive for a book-but if your like me and are dedicated to having dog earred books that you use over and over, and can mark up with highlighters, you may want to skip this one, I don't think you will get the use for your money. Had this book been labelled as a book of patterns I would definitely have given it more stars.

Some flaws in formatting makes this book difficult to use

I'm really glad this was free with my Kindle Unlimited as I would have been disappointed if I had purchased it. First off, the author writes like English is not his first language or else the book was very poorly edited. This makes following and understanding some of his instructions a bit of a challenge. Secondly, I wish this had actually been split into two different books. Right now the first half of the book includes recipes for a traditional stove top pressure cooker and the second half has recipes specific to the Instant Pot. With the Kindle format, this makes the table of contents very cumbersome as you have to scroll through 250 recipes before reaching the section for Instant Pot.

I'm sure I will try some of the recipes but when I have to return a "borrowed" book before I can get something new from Kindle Unlimited, this will be the first to go.

A great Cookbook my new go to book.

I have purchased other cookbooks from Jamie Stewart. I was not disappointed with Top 500 Pressure Cooker and Instant Pot. I had received an Instant Pot for the holidays and had not been using it to its full use. After reading and going over the items in the book, I have gone out and purchased the things I need to try some of the great looking recipes. I have tried a couple and think they are great, ​and the speed in which they can be cooked is great. I would recommend this book to anyone that is looking to have a good reference book or cookbook for their Pressure Cooker.

Great Cookbook!

I have been looking for a pressure cooker cookbook recently and I came across this one. I think it’s great! I like a lot of the recipes and I’m pretty excited to try them out. One problem I seem to have with other books is that some of the ingredients are not very common in other recipes I use but that is not the case here. There are a lot of useful tips in the book and they come in handy, especially if you do not have a lot of experience with a pressure cooker. It goes above and beyond, I highly recommend it!

Wow what a book...I happened to see this book at a sales convention in EMEA........the best book I have ever seen for helping drive sales......I would absolutely recommend this to anyone trying to motivate and get their sales teams going! The info here in this book is reallly valuable....What the previous reviewer may have missed in his comment re "spelling" is that this is written in British English! Content and perspective is superb....

Understanding positive visualization, and the laws of attraction

I came across this book, because I was looking for some information on visualization and affirmation techniques as I'm very interested in the psychology of positive thoughts, and the effect that they can have on self-esteem, and a person's overall quality of life. And this book definitely fits the bill. He teaches readers how to use affirmations and positive visualization techniques that are used by psychologists and psychiatrists and are also included in many Buddhist meditation practices to bring more positive energy, self-esteem in emotional stability and quality of life to practitioners of positive thinking and affirmation techniques. That theory is that eventually using affirmations which is the technique of repeating definitive statements such as "I will get that promotion." Over and over again to provide motivation to achieve the goal, after reading this book I can honestly see why psychologists and psychiatrists use this technique to help patients improve their quality of life. Positive visualization techniques are very relaxing. I swear I could feel the stress just melting away, and it's kind of funny because you're not directly thinking about a goal. You are more or less seeing yourself as having achieved a specific goal. Sort of like watching a home movie or a dream, this technique allows you to clearly visualize the steps necessary to achieve a specific goal, which gives you the necessary motivation to stay on track. As I say, I found the techniques described in this book to be very relaxing and very useful. And I'm glad I stumbled across it when I did as I plan on adding some of these techniques to my meditation practices so that I can relax even more and have more positive energy, which will help me achieve all of my life goals.

align frequency and desire! great reminders for me

I am a strong believer in the law of attraction, though my frequency does not always align with my desires. So the author points out some key reminders that help me to be more present and focused over the past few days. It becomes clear in his writing that the author utilizes some of Tony Robbins' strategies and setting time aside in the moment to center yourself to tackle everything in the day is so critical an something that I've put in the backburner. I am sleeping later working, but I know my morning ritual is such a huge part of me that gives me much vitality. A great beginners guide to the Law and can were as helpful and refreshing reminders for practitioners.

Steve Biko was one of the foremost figures in South Africa's struggle for liberation from the apartheid regime. Murdered by the police when he was only 30, he had already established himself as a leader through his work as a political activist and his writings on Black Consciousness. I am somewhat disappointed with the book - maybe because I have read most of the books authored by Frantz Fanon The Wretched of the Earth. Although I have sympathy with the author and his cause, no new ideas were added to the argument regarding black consciousness and apartheid.

Powerful "Black Consciousness"

"I Write What I Like" was set on the backdrop of the thankfully defunct system of apartheid, but the parallels to our modern world remain both pertinent and poignant.

While activists such as Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela fought apartheid on the political and economic front, Steve Biko fought it on the most basic psychological level. He rejected the fundamental premise that made racism and subsequent apartheid possible. The premise he rejected was "that one kind of man was superior to another kind of man". The questions he posed and the answers he gave made him the most dangerous man alive to the white minority government of South Africa.

The movement Steve Biko helped found was called "Black Consciousness". Many decried it as a form of afro-centric racism. That characterization could not have been further from the truth. Black Consciousness differed sharply from other anti-apartheid movements in that it advocated the preservation and advancement of black culture from the individual level. Far from being reveres-apartheid, Biko called for blacks to have their own institutions, their own achievements, and preserve their own languages and cultural heritage - not to the exclusion of whites but with a clear assertion that their culture was valid, valuable and should be allowed to thrive and grow.

Biko asked the questions that were too hard to answer for their simplicity. "How can one prevent the lose of respect between child and parent when the child is taught by his know-all white tutors to disregard his family teachings? Who can resist losing respect for his tradition when in school his whole cultural background is summed up in one word - barbarism?"

Blacks struggling for equality in South Africa were labeled "terrorists" by the white minority government. This fact resonates ominous parallels with America today. As we rush to shred the rights enumerated in our constitution under the euphemistically titled "Patriot Act", we should be wary of this history. Surely people demanding equality for themselves by non-violent means were not terrorists. Yet this is how they were defined. Anti-terrorism laws, without an objective definition of "terrorism", can be turned against anyone the government finds... uncomfortable.

Torture is another concept that is being openly discussed these days. The question "would we torture of this reason or that reason?" assumes on some level that torture is effective. Steve Biko had some very important observations on torture, as he was often the subject of it; "If you want to make any progress, the best thing is for us to talk. Don't try any rough stuff, because it won't work." - "If you guys want to do this your way, you have to handcuff me and bind my feet together, so that I can't respond. If you allow me to respond, I'm certainly going to respond. And I'm afraid that you may have to kill me in the process even if it's not your intention."

Steve Biko died September 12, 1977. Authorities initially claimed that his death was the result of a hunger strike. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of South Africa Report, published March 1999 stated that: "On 7 September Biko sustained a head injury during interrogation, after which he acted strangely and was uncooperative. The doctors who examined him (naked, lying on a mat and manacled to a metal grille) initially disregarded overt signs of neurological injury." By 11 September Biko had slipped into a continual, semi-conscious state and the police physician recommended he be sent to hospital. Instead he was transported 1,200 km to Pretoria - a 12-hour journey which he made lying naked in the back of a Land Rover. A few hours later, on 12 September, lying on the floor of a cell in the Pretoria Central Prison, Biko died from brain damage. Yet he and his culture were the ones called barbarians.

Biko said, "The most potent weapon in the hand of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed." The Creators name is LOVE

I had a NDE after a serious motorcycle accident when I was 33 years old - I'm now 70! The experience will always be with me! Our Creators name is LOVE!!! Sometimes when I tell my story, the reactions are good and sometimes people just think the brain is reacting to the death process! I only wish I had the ability to express in words what took place, however, I now realize, that words can never express the LOVE that that I felt and the removal of all hate! Hate does not live in that realm, and can never live there! To feel totally immersed in LOVE, cannot be put into the languages of this world - I've tried and failed. I will tell you this much - all religions fail - ALL. Our creator is so far beyond this nonsense that I can't even put it in words! All I know is that I will always LOVE my creator, OM, or what ever name you want to use! I really stopped caring if people believed me or not, however, when they want to know what I experienced - I'm always happy to tell them what happened to me - as best I can - with the limitations that language can express! What a great book! Thanks to you Doctor; now others may understand what I went through! Rather you are a believer or not, Religious or Attheist, Agnostic, or what ever you are, at the very least you will come away with questions, that will at least make you wonder!!! I actually feel blessed that my Creator had me go through this in my Life - as painful as it was! It really made me look at Life in a much different way! Sorry for going on and on, but, I really appreciated this book, especially from a neurosurgeon! All I know is; that to me it was no dream! This was so different that I know it will be with me until I return to my Creator. What an experience! I thought my life was over at age 33, however, he/she, Creator, OM, Love, Truth, has shown me what Life really is! I hope all, and I mean all find what I found! Maybe, just maybe, this world or realm we live in would become a better place!

Riveting; Will Inspire Faith AND Questions

This is an utterly riveting account. I first purchased this as a Kindle book back when it was released, but have just purchased the physical book as well, so that I can lend it out.

Dr. Alexander's story will inspire not only faith that there is an afterlife, but questions about the very nature of life itself. How, for example, can there be a terrestrial world with terrestrial creatures, such as the girl on the butterfly wing? What about sound? Visuals? Aren't these phenomena that require eyes and ears to apprehend? Or, is it consciousness - both centered in the body and outside of it - that produces these experiences?

(To supplement your reading: Esquire magazine published an article purporting to "debunk" Dr. Alexander's truthful account of his experience. Be sure and do a web search of IANDS (the International Association for Near Death Studies's statement on that article. It debunks the debunker.)

I've read other books about the afterlife and this one seemed lame to me. Too much doctor, too much ego, and the religious tone bothered me. Didn't move me at all. I think it's on the bestseller list because of the title, but it didn't move me. I suppose if it helps some to be less afraid of death, it's a good thing. But other books can do better.
