Jack London's unfinished book. It's pretty good. The characters are simple. Read it for the entertainment value.

Assassination Bureau

London supposedly "wrote himself into a corner" in the plot of this story, or else he hadn't the time to finish it, but the resolution by Fish is not only an entertaining conclusion (despite a certain abrupt removal of a key character), but is so similar to London's writing style and his familiarities so that the author transfer is indeterminable. The best part of the book as a whole, as all Londonites will agree, is the simple philisophical dialogue exchanged between characters. For those who are seeking a die-hard, man vs. nature conflict, you still won't be disappointed with the primitiveness of the characters (philisophical, mad, and fanatic) and their interaction with a civilized world that doesn't quite match the truths that they hold to be dear. An excellent read.

I would compare it to Chesterton's The Man Who Was Thursday. Sometimes it seems like a silly game, at other times it's the answer to deep philosophical questions. You must suspend your belief a little and accept the premises. The Assination Bureau is based on certain rules. It tries to perform social rights by doing what could well be considered wrongs: executions of anti-social baddies. But there's a big difference between murder-for-hire (no matter how "justified") and capital punishment by a real government. Playing by the rules of the game, London sets up a clever situation where the organization must destroy itself to be true to its own principles. But as men of principle and reason they whole heartedly embrace their own destruction. Should rationality be held to be of a higher importance than life? Is playing by the rules more important than survival? When does rationality become irrational or irrationality look rational? Though not always convincing, this book asks and answers many interesting questions.

Fascinating, compassionate and accessible while teaching me much that I didn't even know I didn't know

This book was an unexpected and fascinating revelation about a world we all inhabit daily, one that occupies our thoughts and creates numerous tiny anxieties without us usually becoming aware. Aside from being a delightful diversion, the few hours invested in this compassionate book will be richly rewarded in a more nuanced and empathetic understanding of these daily interactions and how to approach them for the benefit of all.

Why is a crowded elevator so awkward? What about what to do when you see an acquaintance approach on the other side of the street, or a colleague in the hallway at work? Say hello too soon and one creates those awkward seconds of continuing to approach with nothing much to say. Say hello too late and it feels like a snub. Then when you pass that colleague again later that morning, then what?

More extreme, how does one behave at a formal dinner when presented a multitude of carefully arranged glasses, forks, knives and spoons? On seeing a guest at one such dinner drink from their freshly presented finger bowl, Queen Victoria nonchalantly drank from her own. That one vignette reveals volumes about that fundamentally decent yet formidable woman and the core values behind good manners.

Comedians would find much in this book as source material for sweet, self-deprecating comedy.

Manners done right are about being aware of these tiny anxieties in ourselves and others and structuring our actions to reduce them while honouring the agency and dignity of the people we interact with. In so behaving, manners become basic practice for more fundamental morality.

With this book I'm struck about how an awareness of good manners is fundamental to a TV series like 'Downtown Abbey'. It is the expert and seemingly effortless practice of manners that makes that era look so attractive and those with good manners seem so fundamentally decent, despite being so undeservingly rich. Those lacking such facility with manners recognize their skilled application by others, even as they struggle to understand how they could treat others as well. This well mannered and accessible book by a professor of philosophy helps illustrate the higher principles at work which, in turn, makes it easier to know how to treat others as they would wish to be treated.

As the book ably points out, manners can also be used for ill. Using them to create arbitrary rules to show up others as uncouth is certainly not good manners. More seriously is the belated insight of the US civil rights era that recognized and challenged the seemingly polite southern practice of addressing African American men as 'boy' while other men were given the dignity of 'Mister'. Such manners fail a fundamental test and good manners then requires challenging them, despite the awkwardness.

Though more than a worthy book, I was disappointed to reach the end. I'd have loved more stories and more examples. In my hunger, it has become apparent that this book has not yet reached the wide audience it deserves. Several times I have refreshed its page on amazon, hoping to get suggestions of similar books, only to see a selection of unrelated books that I myself have purchased. While not helping me find other similar books, it has been an interesting look into amazon's recommendation algorithm.

As it appears that only the book's author is likely to read this review, know that this book has had more influence on me than any I have read in some time - and I read a great many books. This book taught be things I didn't even know I didn't know about situations that happen several times a day in my life. It has given me principles I can apply to do a better job of being the kind of person I would like to be.

I bought this as an ebook just out of curiosity to see how well it would work. A warning flashed as I was about to download which said that pictures would not be downloaded to which i wasn't concerned about because I guessed they were only pictures of the finished recipes. Apparently in the author's introduction she also included some diagrams that I am not able to see, and which would have been useful in understanding some of her points more clearly. I haven't gotten comfortable with using the ebook for a recipe book, and probably won't buy any more cookbooks this way. I have tried a couple of the recipes in the book so far, and liked them although my 5 and 7 year old kids are fussier and have not.

great book with simple recipes

We have made the Korma cashew curry it was very tasty, I was leant this book by my pharmacy after having a food intolerance test done, I found it so useful I bought it on e-book for kindle / iPad pity the pictures get lost in these versions but there wasn't that many pictures overall.

I found out I had intolerances to yeast , milk and eggs plus I'm a vegetarian so I needed recipes excluding these and also without meat.

The recipes are easy enough to follow there's many others I must try, I'd recommend to anyone that finds themselves on a restricted diet.

at last a good cookbook for us vegetarians and vegans

I've scoured the shelves of bookstores and libraries looking for recipes that do NOT include white sugar, dairy products and gluten AND actually taste good! At long last, here it is! There is great variety - from soups and salads to main courses and desserts - with mostly easy-to-make dishes that are adaptable to nearly any individual's specific food allergy or ingredient intolerance or simply, taste. The introduction is chock full of helpful information about the hows and whys of eliminating certain food ingredients, and offering specific menu ideas. The color photos are enough to whet even a carnivore's appetite. I only wish it were twice the size!

I think that the book was pretty good and I recommend it to adults and children. Also, it teaches many things about friendship and friends.

Sarah's at a new place!

In Sarah plain and Tall, I think the open prarie is the most important part of the setting. Reason being, where Sarah comes from, there's buildings, air pollution, roads, and it's crowded. All though, in a prarie, there is trees instead of buildings, fresh air instead of pollution, grass instead of roads, and all the space instead of it being crowded. I didn't really like the book because it's only 58 pages long. I'd recommend this to ages 6 through 10.

Little Book, Big Disappointment

I was sorely disappointed with this small volume. The introduction announces that it will offer decisional tools to (a) improve oneself, (b) understand oneself, (c) understand others, and (d) influence others. These are all fine goals, and the authors do a fair job of introducing them. Therein lies the problem I have with this book. Each decisional model gets about a third of a page for a visualization of the model, and the authors devote no more than the remaining two-thirds of a page and the following page to introduce the model. That's it!

The Eisenhower Matrix, one of the first introduced in the book is a helpful model, as is a SWOT analysis. However, the constraints the authors imposed on themselves prevented even an elementary discussion about the use of SWOT tables. Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs model is presented, and certainly this deserves more than a page for an introduction! Many of the models were new to me, and more helpful explanations about the more complex ones are needed to make a book such as this one truly useful.

To be fair, the book did include a bibliography, but the books cited did not necessarily lead back to all of the models that had been discussed. Some more supplementary material could be gleaned from the Sources section in which the authors give credit for the illustrations used in the book. However, why is so much detective work necessary? In lieu of the abbreviated introductions, I think the authors should have provided more robust bibliographies or "further readings" section on each of the models. Or, better yet, maybe they could have abandoned the unnecessarily restrictive constraints they imposed on themselves and wrote better explanations for the models presented.

I purchased this book because I have impaired executive functioning, and difficulties in decision-making is one of the characteristics of this syndrome. I had hoped to find a bounty of models that would help structure my decision-making processes. Although the book did have a useful tidbit or two, it was largely a disappointment and did not come anywhere near to my hopes for the book. I would recommend this book only for those looking for a mechanism for finding useful models which, once named, can be studied further in other resources.

Should you buy this book?

A small and quick read. Has a bunch of models to help with decision making for different scenarios. I wouldn't recommend it to everyone because not everyone will use the material. Anyone interested in economics, charts, or wants help expanding their decision toolbox should get a copy.

Comes as a small hardback of fine quality, and good paper stock.

Expected a bit more of this book.Not sure what the authors were trying to do, but the list of models could have been larger. Some of the models work only in a vary narrow context and really lacked "value"
On the other hand the two-page format was nice.

High action, adventure - zombies and minotaurs and shapeshifters oh my

One hundred years ago, the Nor invaded Muoro, taking over the Muorokin and using them as slaves. It was all so they could have unlimited access to a drug that is only available in the sea around Muoro called ku, which can - after processing - be smoked or changed into a liquid derivative and taken on the tongue. This drug enhances the abilities of the person taking it - the Nor use it to create Myrmidons, super-humanly strong warriors, whose brutality is infamous. Mia has disguised herself as Nor and taken advantage of the university training to advance her skills in controlling auras and has become a Master - she can change into a tiger or a horse, and also use the power to manipulate others' auras. She is a member of the Underground, rebels who are trying to drive the Nor out of the Muorokin lands.

This book is very fast-paced and action-oriented - it is a quick read and should appeal strongly to those who like near-constant action in their books. The only complaint I had is that there isn't much character development or explanation about the history of people or things - we're just sort of thrown into the middle of all of it and have to try to keep up. Fortunately, the pacing is smooth and the plot is engrossing to the point where you just decide to go with it - and what a ride it is! A stunning debut novel - pick it up and be on the lookout for more books from this highly talented writer!

Fast paced, entertaining book

This is a fast paced fantasy novel that has a cast of characters that includes shapeshifters, ogres, soldiers, golems and even a minotaur. The action starts about 10 pages in and keeps going right until the end. This is a quickly read novel and the storyline keeps you engaged.
There are a few things that keep the novel from being rated higher but none of them are enough to keep one from enjoying this book. A backstory that was more developed and more in depth character portrayal would really add to this story. As it stands, the reader knows that the land is ruled by an evil empire and they are given a few glimpses of their brutality but we aren't ever given more details about why Mia, Kale and the others are fighting. It is easy to root for the underdogs, but having characters that were fleshed out a bit more would make the story more engrossing.
I would also have liked a more refined writing style. The book is easy to read but there are sections that seem to be edited hastily. There are also a few spots that use overly simplistic sentences "Kale's face turned red. His eyes bulged." These tend to stick out mainly because they appear in the middle of text that is written well.
The last point that bothered me- and I know this might seem trivial- is the cussing that seems like it was thrown in on a whim. It's not that I mind the swear words, but the words felt like they were added to make it seem edgy. Instead, I was reminded of hearing teenagers swearing to impress their friends.
To summarize. . . very entertaining book, not a literary classic but I look forward to more from Rick Anthony.

An Action Packed Sci-Fi Adventure!

It has been over a century since the Nor army invaded Mia's homeland and gained control of the people via the Empire. Since that time, a rebel force known as The Underground have been learning the secrets of the mysterious drug "ku" and have been preparing an army of their own. The resistance's only hope lies with Mia - a young shape shifter who has extraordinary powers and can wield the magic of ku like no other. Together with a band of vigilante Masters and Trademasters, they will overthrow the Empire's rule or die trying.

This story is an action packed sci-fi adventure full of shape shifters, zombies, trolls, and all manner of otherworldly characters. Anthony brings the dystopic setting to life and the reader becomes part of the Underground's cause while they struggle to overthrow the Empire. Characters in the story are separated into caste systems with those who know how to work the magic of the drug ku and are able to manipulate auras and enhance things at the pinnacle. This novel is a tale of survival, fighting for freedom, and a wonderful example of doing what you believe is right. The story was an easy read and flowed well. Any fans of science fiction and fantasy should read this book.

The Answers Are in the Book

I am a firm believer in learning from books, as opposed to online. I can flip the colorful picture pages back and forth for comparisons. Best of all, my granddaughters have inherited my love of dogs, and their world can be enlightened by the illustrations and the bold text. All my personal dog books are well thumbed and worn. I though the granddaughters might enjoy books of their own. I see many question and answer sessions about dogs in our future, and most of the answers will come from the book!

Nicely written, but includes one DANGEROUS/DEADLY suggestion by author

The deadly suggestion is found on page 31 in the feeding & nutrition section. On that page is a photo of chocolate candy pieces with the caption, "Very nearly every dog loves chocolate". It's now known that chocolate can be toxic, as in fatally toxic, to dogs. Not much chocolate needs to be ingested, either.

If one removes that great, big error from the book, the rest is rather good. The book provides at least one color photo of each breed described, with well-organized, brief information. Each breed's section includes a small, yellow "breed box" (text box) that covers the areas of size, grooming needs, exercise needs, feeding and temperament, almost in bullet point form. Each breed is also described in several text paragraphs.

My family found this book to be a great place to start in looking for a new dog. We, in fact, discovered a rare breed that we liked very much through this book and did purchase a dog of the same breed for our family. Our little dog has turned out to be just like the book described.

It's a good coffee table book and basic reference tool for looking up dog breeds.

The Ultimate Dog Encyclopedia

This is a great book! There are great pictures of each breed, and a good amount of information, including size, grooming, exercise, etc. There are all kinds of breeds, including rare ones, and plenty info on dog care. The authors could have included more info on each breed though, and some of the pictures for each breed are sideways, so you have no idea what the face of the dog looks like. On one breed, they give you false information. The Eskimo Dog (according to the book) is a different name for the American Eskimo Dog. The book says the Eskie is a large dog weighing 59-104 lbs. and standing 20-27 in at the withers, and it can be any known dog color. The Eskie is actually a small dog that comes in white or biscuit cream only and in three sizes (toy,mini,standard) 9-19 in at the withers and 6-40 lbs. That is the only mistake I have seen in the book, though. Overall, this book is very informative and definetly worth the cost!

Perhaps the best book out there

Even though both of Barry's books compliment each other, I think this is the more important one. If you really put the effort, it can transform your playing and improvising and take you to a very high level as a musician. He goes in-depth, explaining how do you approach and put into practice the patterns you learn, and when do you use them, how to connect them, how to phrase in a meaningful fashion. Really, the best book on the subject I have come across, and I've seen many.

Great jazz book!

I have been playing bass professionally for 45 years. This is the best book of it's kind that I have found. I wish I'd had it years ago! I found it after hours of searching the internet for info about a a theory question that was puzzling me and I found it clearly explained in this book, along with a lot of other very useful material. Bassists should not be put off by the treble clef as the examples are clear, logical and easy to read. In fact this book is great for bassists as the exercises are single line patterns.It's a good idea to work through Book 1 first.

I like textbooks with the continuation, when the more difficult part on the basis of the previous book will allow you to deepen and master the technical skills and theoretical knowledge. This applies to both the books of the author.
