The Sorcerer's Daughter: The Defenders of Shannara, by Terry Brooks

The inspiration for the epic MTV series, the world of Shannara is brimming with untold stories and unexplored territory. Now bestselling author Terry Brooks breaks new ground with a standalone adventure that’s sure to thrill veteran readers and recent converts alike.

The mysterious, magic-wielding Druid order has existed for long ages, battling any evil that threatens the Four Lands—and struggling to be understood and accepted by outsiders. But their hopes of building goodwill are dashed when a demon’s murderous rampage at a peace summit leaves their political opponents dead—casting new suspicions upon the Druids and forcing them to flee from enemies both mortal and monstrous.

Paxon Leah, the order’s appointed protector, knows that blame lies with Arcannen Rai, the vile sorcerer he has battled and defeated before. But there’s no time to hunt his nemesis, if he is to lead the wrongfully accused Druids to their sanctuary. It is a quest fraught with danger, as a furious government agent and his army snap at their heels, and lethal predators stalk them in the depths of the untamed wilderness.

But Arcannen is playing a deeper game than Paxon realizes. Paxon’s sister possesses a powerful magic that the sorcerer longs to control—but Arcannen has not reckoned with the determination of his own estranged daughter, Leofur, who is also Paxon’s devoted lifemate. Leofur sets out on a perilous quest to thwart her father’s desires—while the vengeful Arcannen conjures his blackest magical skills, determined to destroy them all . . . and claim the most powerful of magics for his own.

None of the Federation sentries spared more than a passing glance for the gray-robed pilgrim as he wound his way through the isolated watchtowers that bracketed the road leading up to the east gates of Arishaig. None of those who occupied the towers and could look down on all who passed; none of those stationed to either side of the gates themselves, armed and ready to act to defend the city should a threat present itself. Not even any of those standing atop the walls overlooking the approach, all of whom had the longest span of time and clearest opportunity to observe him.

He was beneath their notice.

He was ragged and sweat-stained, and while he walked steadily enough, there was an air of weariness about him that confirmed his visible circumstances. Others traveling the road passed him by easily, and none of them paid him but a moment’s notice, either. The pilgrim was hooded, so it was impossible to see his face within the shadows of his covering—not without making an effort, and no one felt inclined to do so. He was just one more visitor to the Federation Capital City, one more visitor come to view the most wondrous Southland edifice constructed in the last fifty years.

Indeed, the city of Arishaig frequently astounded the men and women of the Four Lands. Rebuilt after the demons of the Forbidding had burned it to the ground, it was nothing if not formidable. Constructed to withstand any attack launched against it—whether by demons and dragons or things more fearful still—Arishaig had become a fortress that defied all attackers. Its walls soared hundreds of feet high and were thicker than the tightened formation lines of a shield-and-spear rank. Its battlements were studded with flash rips and rail slings loaded and ready to release, all mounted on swivels that directed fire accurately and broadly. Airships were situated on elevated landing pads in each of the four corners of the city proper, with flits and skiffs and other assorted quick-moving fliers readily available for the use of First Response—the company formed years earlier to serve as an initial line of defense against all assaults on the city.

Within, an inner wall shadowed the outer, and within both rings the entire population save those engaged in labor on the outlying farms worked and resided. Five million people lived within Arishaig now—and some claimed there were even more. Even the bulk of the Federation army was housed and trained inside those walls. And at its exact center, the Phoenix Tower—symbol of a Federation city raised from the ashes of the old—towered above all, rising more than thirty stories into the clouds. The Coalition Council occupied it. The Federation government’s offices, living quarters, healing centers, education adjuncts, and food storage warehouses formed a compound more than a mile square.

All this awaited the traveler in the gray robes, but he kept his eyes on the road ahead. He already knew what lay within. He had passed this way before.

A flurry of skyward motion, coupled with the sound of expended power from diapson crystals exploding through parse tubes, caught his attention, and for a second he slowed. Ghost Flares roared overhead, the fastest of the airships, looking like naught but black shadows as they flashed past. All eyes turned skyward to watch. Even the gray-robed pilgrim paused.

But only so he would not attract attention by choosing to move while the others stood still.

At the gates, he waited in line for permission to pass. Others crowded ahead of him, and he let them do so. Patience in all things, he reminded himself. When it was his turn to approach, he did so almost reluctantly, his robes dragging on the ground, his head lowered.

The soldiers judging the merits of those seeking admission barely looked at him. “Name?” said one.

“Raushka.” His voice was as weary as his look.

“Home?”

“I am from Sterne.”

“Business?”

A moment’s hesitation. “I seek medical care.”

Now the soldier looked up. “What sort of medical care?”

“Surgery to repair flesh damaged in a fire. I require a reconstruction.”

Another soldier stepped forward to join the first. Both peered at him questioningly. “Where were you burned?” the new man asked.

“My face.”

The soldiers exchanged a glance. “Let me see,” said the first.

The pilgrim hesitated. “I would advise against it.”

“Fellow, we are soldiers,” said the second. “What we have already seen would turn your innards to jelly. Let us be the judge of what we can and cannot stand to look upon.”

A long silence. “As you wish.”

He lifted his head slightly and pulled back the hood. The soldiers’ faces turned ashen. People around them gasped and flinched back. One woman turned her head and vomited. The pilgrim stood without moving, his face and head exposed, his eyes—or the one eye that remained—fixed on the soldier who claimed to have seen the worst of everything.

“That’s enough,” the soldier said, shaking his head in dismay. “Cover yourself.”

The pilgrim did so, again assuming a slightly bent position so that his face retreated once more into the hood’s shadows.

The speaker took a deep breath. He didn’t even bother looking at his fellow. “If there is help for you here, it surpasses any form of healing I am familiar with. Go on, now, and find it if you can.”

The pilgrim moved on, into the shadow of the gates, into the throngs that crowded the streets beyond. Behind him, there were mutterings and exclamations, oaths and wardings. Everyone was unsettled by what they had seen.

Just as the pilgrim had intended.

When the door to his shop opened an hour later and the pilgrim walked through, the old man who was the shop’s owner and sole occupant glanced up in the manner of the soldiers at the gate, but was quicker than they were to revise his level of interest. The pilgrim was not who he appeared to be; the owner recognized this at once. It was his business to deal with men and women who specialized in deception and trickery, and he knew this one. So instincts honed on a thousand such encounters kept him from being caught off guard.

The gray-robed horror approached the counter and stopped. He did not look up. He did not lift his face into the light. “You have what I ordered?”

“I do,” the old man replied. “Do you wish it now?”

“In a minute. Tell me, is your business much improved since leaving Sterne? Is it not doing better in Arishaig?”

The question seemed innocuous, but no question asked by this man ever was. “I am content.”

“You traffic in so many wondrous things. It must be easier finding them here, in such a large city.”

“It is easier, yes.”

“And you remember it was I who sent you here? I who told you to leave Sterne before the unfortunate events involving the Red Slash? You remember this?”

“I could hardly forget. And I will always be grateful.”

“Opportunities abound?”

“They do.”

“But where there are greater opportunities, there are greater temptations, as well. Opportunities present themselves—opportunities that require acts once believed unthinkable. What does it matter if you commit a small betrayal when doing so might result in the acquisition of a considerable fortune?”

The old man went cold. “Such acts serve little purpose if you are a dead man. It is much better to stay faithful to those who have been faithful to you.”

The pilgrim laughed softly. “I would expect you to say as much.”

“Is there some reason you think I have deceived you?”

“None. I ask only to reassure myself. If you were to lie, I would see it in your eyes. Why don’t you show me what you have been holding for me?”

The old man took the pilgrim into the back of his shop. This establishment was much like the one he had managed in Sterne—small, cramped, and shabby, filled with this and that—a place where no discernible order or purpose revealed itself to any save himself. He still mostly provided information and access, although now and then—and for his better customers—he also provided supplies. He had done so for this man, this monster.

The back of the store was much like the front, although so crammed with boxes and crates that almost no open space was available. The two of them barely found room to maneuver as the old man released the spring catch hidden in the wall behind the false crate and pulled out the garments hung within.

“You may try them on here, if you wish,” he offered.

The pilgrim lifted his head far enough that his distorted features were revealed. The old man shuddered inwardly but kept from showing his horror. “An imaginative disguise,” he managed.

A thin laugh. “Not a disguise, exactly. More a reordering of flesh, blood, and bone through a careful employment of magic. I wished to look a certain way and I found the means by which to do so. I took no chances of discovery.”

The shopkeeper bowed in acknowledgment. “Very clever.”

“I will need a basin filled with hot water, towels, and a mirror.” The pilgrim’s face lowered once more into shadow. “Can you provide me with these?”

The old man beckoned. “My apartment is next door. Come.”

They went outside. The old man locked the door to his business behind him, then walked a dozen steps to another door. A stairway took them to an upstairs hallway. His was the second door on the left. He unlocked it and they entered. Once inside, he started to lock the door behind them when the pilgrim stopped him.

“Go back to your shop and wait for me there. Leave the key to these rooms. I will lock up when I am done and return the key before leaving.”

Bowing, the old man did as he was ordered. There was never any question of doing otherwise. He left the apartment, went back down the stairs, and returned to his shop. He took a few minutes to close up his hiding place in the back room and reseal the false crate front. Then he waited, occupying himself with cataloging the cost of his services and watching the clock on the wall tick slowly toward the new hour. He was not afraid of this man, but he was wary. It did not matter that he would never betray him. If the man even suspected he had, he would be dead. There was no predicting a man like that. He would rest easier when this business was finished.

He did not have to wait much longer. Approximately thirty minutes later, the shop door opened. The man who entered was garbed in black robes of fine quality, with silver embroidery woven into the edges of the sleeves. A patch was sewn into the breast panel over his heart—an insignia well known throughout the Four Lands. It was called the Eilt Druin and displayed the image of a hand holding forth a burning torch. It could be found on the robes of all members of the Fourth Druid Order.

The face of the pilgrim had changed yet again; now he was someone else entirely. The shopkeeper did not know this man, and he thought it would be best if he forgot him right away. It would be best if he took even the memory of that face to the grave with him.

“Excellency,” he said instead. “Always your servant.”

The other man made no response but merely handed back the key to the shopkeeper’s apartment. The old man took it and pocketed it. The man who pretended to be a Druid then handed him a fistful of credits—far more than the shopkeeper had expected for his services.

“Remember this,” the man said. “I always reward those who serve me well, and I always find out about those who don’t.”

Then he turned and went through the door, his black Druid robes billowing out behind him. The old man walked to the doorway and watched him go. Even after the stranger was gone, he waited almost an hour, just to be sure. Then he closed up his shop and retired to his apartment. Once there, he counted out the credits he had been paid and swore he would never do this again.

But he was lying to himself; he would always do whatever this man told him to.

Because it was never a good idea to say no to Arcannen Rai.

Two

Leofur Rai stood at the parapets of the inner walls of Paranor, staring out over the miles and miles of deep woods that surrounded the Druid’s Keep. She studied the emerald canopy with intense concentration, as if she might find something that was hidden. Then, pushing back from the walls, she began wandering the ramparts, looking at her feet as she walked, wondering where she was going—not here specifically, of course, but in the wider course of her life. She remained unsure, even after a year of searching. An entire year spent living in Paranor.

Paxon had brought her to Paranor after they had lived together for a time in Wayford—an arrangement arrived at spontaneously and with considerable misgivings on her part. She could still recall the night he appeared on her doorstep after a five-year absence. He had looked so desperate, so lost, that her heart had broken for him. At the time, she had been convinced that he was never returning—that he had chosen a different path from the one she had once imagined they would take together, and there was nothing she could do about it. So it was a shock that he had found his way back.

A shock that, after it lessened, would arouse suspicion, regret, and deep uncertainty.

But she had taken him in. Her feelings for him were still strong enough that she was not prepared to cast him out, so she had brought him into her home and into her life in less than a week. He was damaged, she knew, and needed time to recover. He had left the Druid order. He was thinking of abandoning his post as the High Druid’s Blade. What happened to him when he faced the sorcerer Arcannen in the city of Sterne, and thereafter when he searched for—and found—the strange boy who had inherited the magic of the wishsong, had undone him. He was still Paxon, but hollow and directionless, and believed she was the true north that might lead him out of the wilderness.

The love they found grew slowly but steadily. The seeds had been planted even before his return. Like flowers buried in fertile soil, love had broken through and bloomed into something amazing. She had doubted it for a time, wary of such miracles, but in the end had given herself to it readily. He wanted her; he needed her. He was where he belonged with her. She could feel it in his words and actions. But would it last? She couldn’t be sure. She only knew it was worth finding out.

Then, inevitably perhaps—when he had come all the way back from his dark uncertainty—he had decided to return to Paranor. Perhaps only for a while, perhaps never again as the Blade, but Chrysallin was there, and he could not let his sister stay longer without him. He was afraid for her. She was vulnerable without his steadying presence—something the Druid order might try to take advantage of.

It was her voice, of course. The power of her voice was enough to destroy someone as powerful as the witch Mischa—now, there was magic the Druid order would love to get its hands on! If Chrysallin could be persuaded to use it for their purposes . . .

But of course, it wasn’t that simple. Chrys had suffered a breakdown during her battle with Mischa and had blocked out all memory of what had transpired. She had no idea that she possessed this power, no hint she had inherited the fabled wishsong from her Ohmsford ancestors.

Leofur turned, looking away from the forest and down into the south courtyard where the gardens flourished. Chrysallin sat amid a profusion of colors and scents, her eyes closed, her hands clasped loosely in her lap, meditating. It was Leofur who had taught her this technique.

As she watched Paxon’s sister, Leofur took note of her stillness, her calm. And her thoughts returned to her own lack of both.

It had been a hard decision to come north with Paxon, yet she had done so anyway. She had valued her independence in Wayford, where her home and her friends were, but none of these was as important to her as Paxon. He had told her he would have understood if she had chosen to remain behind. He would come back to visit her, he promised, if she decided to stay. But he must leave no matter what her choice, because he feared for his sister and could not bear the thought of losing her again.

So Leofur had decided, following the path that would keep them together, believing their time as a couple had not yet played out. But she had asked him of their future together, seeking a commitment to buttress her decision. Would he become her life partner? Would he commit to doing so right now?

He said he would.

So resolved, they had returned to Paranor, where both were received warmly by Isaturin, Ard Rhys of the Fourth Druid Order. Perhaps he dissembled, but she thought not. Paxon was reunited with his sister and reinstated as the High Druid’s Blade without equivocation. Leofur herself was given leave to pursue any course of study or action she wished. It was all she could have hoped for.

But what surprised her—and what in the end made all the difference—was the friendship she had found with Chrys.

It was an unexpected discovery. At first, the two had circled each other like wary cats, each knowing the other held an important place in Paxon’s life, yet neither willing to yield ground. But once the sizing up was completed, Leofur had found herself drawn to Chrys more strongly than she had expected, and they quickly bonded. In part, it was because Chrysallin filled a void. As Paxon’s duties called him away from the Keep for increasingly longer periods of time, Leofur found herself missing the sheer need for her company he had displayed in the early days, and his sister proved an unexpected substitute. But in larger part, it was because Arcannen had scarred both of them permanently. Both had suffered at his hands and were trying to find ways to heal.

Of course, Chrysallin had been more than a little wary when Leofur had first revealed that she was Arcannen Rai’s daughter. But whatever awkwardness this might have caused was quickly lifted when Leofur explained what her father had done to her in her early years, and how they had been estranged ever since. The fact that Paxon had chosen her as a life partner provided further proof that any relationship between father and daughter—save for the inescapable biological one—had long since vanished.

In addition, Paxon was eager for Leofur and his sister to be friends, and had asked Leofur to do what she could to help Chrys come to terms with the wishsong magic. Because she was her father’s daughter, Leofur might have some knowledge and understanding of Arcannen’s skills that would help Chrys to develop a mastery of her own. After all, Paxon had come back to Paranor intent on revealing to his sister the truth about her dubious gift, and to help her find a way through the doubt and fear that might arise with the knowledge. And Leofur was in a unique position to help with this.

Once Chrysallin had been provided with the full story behind her encounter with Mischa, Leofur stepped in to offer what help she could. Paxon arranged for a Druid who was a skilled practitioner of mental projection—a form of magic not so different from the wishsong—to work with Chrys on the practical aspects of mastering its power. Leofur chose to teach Chrys what she knew of developing control over her emotional and mental stability—a skill she’d learned when her own life had become so unpredictable. She started with meditation several times a day, and employed a regimen of sleeping and eating that should mitigate any stress. She helped Chrys come to terms with the aftereffects of Arcannen’s damage by detailing her own experience. She encouraged Chrys to take long walks, to take up crafts and pastimes that would relax her mind while occupying her hands. But mostly, she made herself available as a confidante.

I suppose it had to end somehow
By Mark E. Hengst
As we come to the end of Terry Brooks' Shannara writing days, it has become more of a chore to read and enjoy the stories that he puts forth. By the time you get to this entry, if you are not tired of Arcannen, then you may find this story more enjoyable than the two previous Defenders of Shanara stories. Reading Arcannen's exploits, reminds me a little of how obnoxious Sylar became as a character in the NBC show Heroes. No matter what happened, he was always 20 steps ahead of everybody in the world. He always had some plan that was fool proof, until the very end the story when the good guys would, if not win, at least stop him.

One thing I will not understand about this characters, is if he has the type of power that he uses to wipe out the Federation council, why not finish off the Druid at the same time and walk away without any enemies? "Just Cause" seems to be the only answer I can come up with. While I can accept this type of decision making in TV shows, in books it is hard for me to look past. Particularly when the character is supposedly as intelligent and all powerful as he is.

I found the story to be serviceable, if predictable, and at least an ending to the arc of these characters. This comes down to personal preference, but I was very disappointed at how Paxon was left at the end of the story. Despite everything he went through, he essentially ended up with nothing, other than his life. It was strange how Brooks seemed to change the way the character behaved from story to story as this book essentially used Leofur's character to paint him as a more unlikeable character.

Personal tastes aside, this is not the worst Brooks Shannara book written and it does serve to end this trilogy of stories. Word has it that he is only writing one more series and I fear that this may be for the best. While Brook's writing was so important to me back in 1988, I find his style and diction rather basic when compared to the works of modern fantasy authors such as George R. R. Martin

I have read all of Terry's Books and love the Shannara world
By John D Murphy Jr
I have read all of Terry's Books and love the Shannara world, but his writing seems to have lost something since he wrote First King of Shannara. His character development has waned in his later books and it almost seems that he rushes through many of them. I bet Lester Del ray would not have allowed some of them to be published in their current form. Nevertheless, this one was par for many of his latest and certainly held my interest because Terry wrote it and it was the Shannara world, but I thought that the conclusion of the main character, Paxon Leah, really was anticlimactic. The whole series revolved around him until this book and you were left with a very unsatisfying conclusion for Paxon and the series antagonist Arcannon Rai. It is like Terry has gotten board writing in the Shannara world and is anxious to conclude it and move on. (Sigh.. I long for a book like Wishsong or a series like The Heritage of Shannara). That was when he was at the top of his game.

A good read, but lacking
By Dale A Mellor
While this book and trilogy were good, they don't really measure up to other Shannara books. I have been a fan of Terry Brooks since the Sword of Shannara, but this one is missing something. The trilogy itself seems like three separate storylines, even though it has many of the same characters. This book follows Leofur (the sorcerer's daughter) as she searches for a friend kidnapped by a witch. A separate storyline follows Paxon Leah as he deals with Leofur's father and tries to make his way back to Paranor. The story seems stretched out with page after page exploring Leofur's feelings and thoughts. Brooks keeps coming back again and again to describe her feelings to the point of boring the reader, and overshadowing the story itself. The climax of the trilogy is wrapped up in the final few pages, and the story ends rather too quickly after that. It is somewhat anti-climactic.
Still worth reading, but not as good as some of Terry Brook's other works.

The Zone: A Prison Camp Guard's Story, by Sergei Dovlatov

Written in Sergei Dovlatov’s unique voice and unmatched style, The Zone is a satirical novelization of Dovlatov’s time as a prison guard for the Soviet Army in the early 1960s. Snapshots of the prison are juxtaposed with the narrator’s letters to Igor Markovich of Hermitage Press in which he urges Igor to publish the very book we’re reading. As Igor receives portions of the prison camp manuscript, so too does the reader.
Arguably Dovlatov’s most significant work, The Zone illuminates the twisted absurdity of the life of a prison guard: “Almost any prisoner would have been suited to the role of a guard. Almost any guard deserved a prison term.” Full of Dovlatov’s trademark dark humor and dry wit, The Zone’s narrator is an extension of his author, and the book fittingly begins with the following disclaimer: “The names, events, and dates given here are all real. I invented only those details that were not essential. Therefore, any resemblance between the characters in this book and living people is intentional and malicious. And all fictionalizing was unexpected and accidental.” What follows is a complex novel that captures two sides of Dovlatov: the writer and the man.

A good change of reading
By Edward C. Carpenter
The previous reviewer finds nothing original here and one wonders how far he got into the book. Its peculiar structure, with letters to a potential publisher interspersed with just-written chapters, allows us to see two sides of the author as far-from-omniscient participant in the narrative and detached artist / intellectual commentator. Dovlatov's easy-going, colloquial style and humorous depictions pulled me in quickly. Surprisingly serious and tragic undertones emerged. This just may be Dovlatov's version of Notes from the Underground.

Looking at software engineering from a historical perspective, the 1960s and earlier could be viewed as the functional era, the 1970s the schedule era, the 1980s the cost era, and the 1990s and beyond the quality and efficiency era. In the 1960s we learned how to exploit information technology to meet institutional needs and began to link software with the daily operations of institutions. In the 1970s, as the industry was characterized by massive schedule delays and cost overruns, the focus was on planning and control of software projects. Phase-based life-cycle models were introduced, and analysis, like the mythical man-month, emerged. In the 1980s hardware costs continued to decline, and information technology permeated every facet of our institutions and became available to individuals. As competition in the industry became keen and low-cost applications became widely implemented, the importance of productivity in software development increased significantly. Various software engineering cost models were developed and used. In the late 1980s, the importance of quality was also recognized.

The 1990s and beyond is certainly the quality era. With state-of-the-art technology now able to provide abundant functionality, customers demand high quality. Demand for quality is further intensified by the ever-increasing dependence of society on software. Billing errors, large-scale disrupted telephone services, and even missile failures during recent wars can all be traced to the issue of software quality. In this era, quality has been brought to the center of the software development process. From the standpoint of software vendors, quality is no longer an advantage factor in the marketplace; it has become a necessary condition if a company is to compete successfully.

Starting in the mid 1990s two major factors emerged that have proved to have an unprecedented impact on not only software engineering but also on global business environments: business reengineering for efficiency and the Internet. Software development has to be more efficient and the quality level of the delivered products has to be high to meet requirements and to be successful. This is especially the case for mission-critical applications. The adverse impact of poor quality is much more significant and at a much wider scale; the quality "dikes" that software is supposed to provide are never more important. These factors will continue to affect software engineering for many years to come during this new millennium.

Measurement plays a critical role in effective and efficient software development, as well as provides the scientific basis for software engineering that makes it a true engineering discipline. This book describes the software quality engineering metrics and models: quality planning, process improvement and quality control, in-process quality management, product engineering (design and code complexity), reliability estimation and projection, and analysis of customer satisfaction data. Many measurement books take an encyclopedic approach, in which every possible software measurement is included, but this book confines its scope to the metrics and models of software quality. Areas such as cost estimation, productivity, staffing, and performance measurement, for which numerous publications exist, are not covered.

In this edition, seven new chapters have been added, covering in-process metrics for software testing, object-oriented metrics, availability metrics, in-process quality assessment, software project assessment, process improvement dos and don'ts, and measuring software process improvement. The chapter that described the AS/400 software quality management system has been eliminated. Updates and revisions have been made throughout the original chapters, and new sections, figures, and tables have been added.

Two of the new chapters are special contributions from two experts. This is a key feature of the new edition. The chapter on the dos and don'ts of software process improvement is contributed by Patrick O'Toole. A highly regarded process improvement expert and with over 20 years of experience, Patrick brings to this book a perspective on process improvement that I share as a practitioner. That perspective is based on practical experience, is project-centric, and is aligned with the strategic business imperative of the organization. Patrick also brings humor to this otherwise serious subject, making the reading of the chapter so enjoyable. The chapter on measuring software process improvement is a special contribution by Capers Jones. A pioneer in software metrics, productivity research, software quality control, and software assessments, Capers's work is well known nationally and internationally. His data-based and fact-based approach in software assessments and benchmarking studies is unparalleled. Based on experience and data from more than 10,000 projects, he brings to the readers a practical approach to software process improvement and the major quantitative findings related to software process improvement. The value of function point metrics is demonstrated via the analyses and findings. The chapter is a must read for software process professionals who are interested in measuring software process improvement.

Another new feature in this edition is a set of recommendations for small teams and organizations that are starting to implement a metrics program, with minimum resources. These recommendations are shown in the form of box inserts in nine of the chapters. A number of examples in the book are based on small team projects, and many methods and techniques are appropriate for large projects as well as small ones. This set of recommendations is from the perspective of small organizations or teams using a small number of metrics, with the intent to effect improvement in their software development effort.

This book is intended for use by software quality professionals; software project managers; software product managers; software development managers; software engineers; software product assurance personnel; and students in software engineering, management information systems, systems engineering, and quality engineering and management. For teachers, it is intended to provide a basis for a course at the upper-division undergraduate or graduate level. A number of software engineering, computer science, and quality engineering programs in the United States and overseas have used the first edition of this book as a text.

Themes of This Book

This book has several themes. First, balancing theory, techniques, and real-life examples, it provides practical guidelines in the practice of quality engineering in software development. Although equations and formulas are involved, the focus is on the understanding and applications of the metrics and models rather than mathematical derivations. Throughout the book, numerous real-life examples are used from the software development laboratory at IBM Rochester, Minnesota, home of the AS/400 and the IBM eServer iSeries computer systems, and from other companies in the software industry. IBM Rochester won the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in 1990. A number of metrics described in this book were being used at that time, and many have been developed and refined since then. All metrics are substantiated by ample implementation experience. IBM Rochester develops and delivers numerous projects of different sizes and types every year, including very large and complex as well as small ones; and they range from firmware, to operating systems, to middleware, to applications.

Second, I attempt to provide a good coverage of the various types of metrics and models in the emerging field of software quality engineering. In addition to general discussions about metrics and techniques, this book categorizes and covers four types of metrics and models: (1) quality management models; (2) software reliability and projection models; (3) complexity metrics and models; and (4) customer-view metrics, measurements, and models. These metrics and models cover the entire software development process from high-level design to testing and maintenance, as well as all phases of reliability. Furthermore, although this book is not on total quality management (TQM), it is a major consideration in the coverage of metrics. The philosophy of TQM is the linking of product quality and customer satisfaction for the purpose of achieving long-term success. TQM is the reason for including two chapters on customer-view metrics and measurements--availability metrics and customer satisfaction--in addition to the many chapters on product and process metrics. In other discussions in the book, the customer's perspective is included where appropriate.

Third, by linking metrics and models to quality improvement strategies and improvement actions, we attempt to focus on using, not just describing, metrics. A framework for interpreting in-process metrics and assessing in-process quality status--the effort/outcome model--is presented. The direct link between a recommended quality strategy during development and the defect-removal model is shown. Examples of actions tied to specific metrics and analysis are given. Furthermore, to illustrate the metrics, many figures and graphs are used. This is a reflection of the fact that in real-life project and quality management, a clear visual presentation often improves understanding and increases the effectiveness of the metrics.

Fourth, following up on quality and process improvement at a more general level than specific metric discussions, the book continues with chapters that discuss the in-process quality assessment process, a method for conducting software project assessments, practical advice on process improvement dos and don'ts, and quantitative analysis of software process improvement. The common thread underlying these chapters, as with other chapters on metrics and models, is practical experience with industry projects.

Organization of This Book

The following list details the focus of each chapter.

  • Chapter 1, What Is Software Quality?, discusses the definition of quality and software quality. The customer's role in the definition is highlighted. Quality attributes and their relationships are discussed. The second part of the chapter covers the definition and framework of TQM and the customer's view of quality, a key focus in this book.
  • Chapter 2, Software Development Process Models, reviews various development process models that are used in the software industry. It briefly describes two methods of software process maturity assessment--the SEI process capability maturity model (CMM) (by the Software Engineering Institute) and the SPR assessment method (by the Software Productivity Research, Inc.). It summarizes two bodies of quality management standards--the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award assessment discipline and ISO 9000.
  • Chapter 3, Fundamentals of Measurement Theory, examines measurement - theory fundamentals, which are very important for the practice of software measurement. The concept of operational definition and its importance in measurement are illustrated with an example. The level of measurement, some basic measures, and the concept of six sigma are discussed. The two key criteria of measurement quality, reliability and validity, and the related issue of measurement errors are examined and their importance is articulated. This chapter also provides a discussion on correlation and addresses the criteria necessary to establish causality based on observational data.
  • Chapter 4, Software Quality Metrics Overview, presents examples of quality metrics for the three categories of metrics associated with the software life cycle: end-product, in-process, and maintenance. It describes the metrics programs of several large software companies and discusses collection of software engineering data.
  • Chapter 5, Applying the Seven Basic Quality Tools in Software Development, describes the application of the basic statistical tools for quality control, known as Ishikawa's seven basic tools, in software development. The potentials and challenges of applying the control chart in software environments are discussed. In addition, a qualitative tool for brainstorming and for displaying complex cause-and-effect relationships--the relations diagram--is discussed.
  • Chapter 6, Defect Removal Effectiveness, is the first of five chapters about the models and metrics that describe the quality dynamics of software development. Through two types of models, quality management models and software reliability and projection models, the quality of software development can be planned, engineered, managed, and projected. This chapter examines the central concept of defect removal effectiveness, its measurements, and its role in quality planning.
  • Chapter 7, The Rayleigh Model, describes the model and its implementation as a reliability and projection model. The Rayleigh Model's use as a quality management model is discussed in Chapter 9.
  • Chapter 8, Exponential Distribution and Reliability Growth Models, discusses the exponential distribution and the major software reliability growth models. These models, like the Rayleigh Model, are used for quality projection before the software is shipped to customers, just before development is complete. The models are also used for maintenance planning, to model the failure pattern or the defect arrival patterns in the field.
  • Chapter 9, Quality Management Models, describes several quality management models that cover the entire development cycle. In-process metrics and reports that support the models are shown and discussed. A framework for interpreting in-process metrics and assessing in-process quality status--the effort/outcome model--is presented.
  • Chapter 10, In-Process Metrics for Software Testing, is a continuation of Chapter 9; it focuses on the metrics for software testing. The effort/outcome model, as it applies to metrics during the testing phase, is elaborated. Candidate metrics for acceptance testing to evaluate vendor-developed software, and the central question of how to know your product is good enough to ship, are also discussed.
  • Chapter 11, Complexity Metrics and Models, discusses the third type of metrics and models in software engineering. While quality management models and reliability and projection models are for project management and quality management, the objective of the complexity metrics and models is for software engineers to be able to improve their design and implementation of software development.
  • Chapter 12, Metrics and Lessons Learned for Object-Oriented Projects, covers design and complexity metrics, productivity metrics, quality and quality management metrics for object-oriented development, and lessons learned from the deployment and implementation of OO projects. The first section can be viewed as a continuation of the discussion on complexity metrics and models; the other sections fall within the framework of quality and project management.
  • Chapter 13, Availability Metrics, discusses system availability and outage metrics, and explores the relationships among availability, reliability, and the traditional defect-rate measurement. Availability metrics and customer satisfaction measurements are the fourth type of metrics and models--customer-oriented metrics.
  • Chapter 14, Measuring and Analyzing Customer Satisfaction, discusses data collection and measurements of customer satisfaction, and techniques and models for the analysis of customer satisfaction data. From Chapter 3 to this chapter, the entire spectrum of metrics and models is covered.
  • Chapter 15, Conducting In-Process Quality Assessments, describes in-process quality assessments as an integrated element of good project quality management. Quality assessments are based on both quantitative indicators, such as those discussed in previous chapters, and qualitative information.
  • Chapter 16, Conducting Software Project Assessments, takes the discussion to yet another level; this chapter proposes a software project assessment method. The focus is at the project level and the discussion is from a practitioner's perspective.
  • Chapter 17, Dos and Don'ts of Software Process Improvement by Patrick O'Toole, offers practical advice for software process improvement professionals. It provides a link to the process maturity discussions in Chapter 2.
  • Chapter 18, Using Function Point Metrics to Measure Software Process Improvement by Capers Jones, discusses the six stages of software process improvement. Based on a large body of empirical data, it examines the costs and effects of process improvement. It shows the results of quantitative analyses with regard to costs, time, schedule, productivity, and quality. It articulates the value of Function Point metrics. It provides a link to the process maturity discussions in Chapter 2.
  • Chapter 19, Concluding Remarks, provides several observations with regard to software measurement in general and software quality metrics and models in particular, and it offers a perspective on the future of software engineering measurement.
  • In the Appendix, a real-life example of a project assessment questionnaire is shown. Per the methods and techniques discussed in Chapter 16, readers can customize the questionnaire for their project assessment efforts.
Suggested Ways to Read This Book

The chapters of this book are organized for reading from beginning to end. Later chapters refer to concepts and discussions in earlier chapters. At the same time, each chapter addresses a separate topic and chapters in some groups are more closely coupled than others. Some readers may choose to read specific topics or decide on different starting points. For example, those who are not interested in quality definitions, process models, and measurement fundamentals discussions can start with Chapter 4, Software Quality Metrics Overview. Those who intend to immediately get to the central topics of defect removals, metrics and models for quality planning, and management and projection can start with Chapter 6, Defect Removal Effectiveness. In general, I recommend that the chapters be read in groups, as follows.

  • Chapters 1 through 3
  • Chapter 4
  • Chapter 5
  • Chapters 6 through 10
  • Chapters 11 and 12
  • Chapters 13 and 14
  • Chapters 15 through 18
  • Chapter 19

Excellent overview of software quality metrics
By Jennifer Booker
I use this to teach a class on metrics for Drexel University. The material is inherantly dry, but Kan covers it clearly and well. Agood balance is struck between product metrics (e.g. reliability) and broader metrics (customer satisfaction).

Dragon Tales
By L. Levine
Bran is used to doing what he wants in life but he is getting pressure to find a mate. The dragon shifter population is small and they need more children. He enjoys his work and the models he hires to be his escort to events. He doesn't expect to meet Seraphina at an exhibit and feel so compelled to be with her. Seraphina is fascinated by dragon stories and curates the exhibit. He has to convince her to risk her job to have a personal relationship with him and their is also a danger to them both. It turns out they have a connection neither of them knew about. It is a pretty quick read and appealing to those who like dragon shifters. I would have liked a little more development to the story with background on Seraphina. The romance moves fast. I received a copy in return for a honest review.

Disappointing ending
By Julia A. Miller
This was an adequate book until the end. The book ended with a lot of unanswered questions from the plot. It wasn't even a very good ending. Situations/items were raised but never answered before the book ended. Disappointing...

Anyone interested in Dragon shifter stories, will enjoy. Anyone interested in a HEA with a twist will enjoy
By cheri
Bran is being pressured, by his mother, to find a mate. If he doesn't do so soon he will have more powerful pressure. Still, he is in no hurry—enter Seraphina, Museum representative and scholar—her specialty, dragons. She feels while there is no concrete evidence of their existence, with so many artifacts they very likely did exist. Did being the operative word.

Bran is instantly drawn to her, at first just as a lover then he feels more and knows he will have her for more. He just has to convince her, let her in on his big secret, make her promise to keep that secret—oh yeah, and escape the sudden danger in their life.

Seaphina wants to resist Bran, however the opportunity of access to his treasure trove of dragon artifacts and art makes that impossible. Can she resist the man? If she learns about his other side, how will she react?

A thoroughly enjoyable one-sitting read. I am always impressed with Ms. Amor's books and this is no exception. Anyone interested in Dragon shifter stories, will enjoy. Anyone interested in a HEA with a twist will enjoy. This complete story with no cliff hangers proves that shorts can be good reads with a talented author.

I was provided an ARC for an honest review.
