Almost any guard deserved a prison term.” Full of Dovlatov’s trademark dark humor and dry wit, The Zone’s narrator is an extension of his author, and the book fittingly begins with the following disclaimer: “The names, events, and dates given here are all real. I invented only those details that were not essential. Therefore, any resemblance between the characters in this book and living people is intentional and malicious. About the Author
Born to an Armenian mother and a Jewish father, Sergei Dovlatov (1941 - 90) grew up in Leningrad. Because of his writings, which he could not publish in Russia, he was persecuted by the authorities, and ultimately forced into exile in the US, where he developed his talent as a comic writer. Since his death in 1990, Dovlatov has become one of the most popular and widely read authors in Russia.

A good change of reading

The previous reviewer finds nothing original here and one wonders how far he got into the book. Its peculiar structure, with letters to a potential publisher interspersed with just-written chapters, allows us to see two sides of the author as far-from-omniscient participant in the narrative and detached artist / intellectual commentator. Dovlatov's easy-going, colloquial style and humorous depictions pulled me in quickly. Surprisingly serious and tragic undertones emerged. This just may be Dovlatov's version of Notes from the Underground.
