Elegant celebration of imagination.
By J.Prather
*This book provided by the publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Pool is a beautiful wordless book that illustrates one young boy's ocean adventure in a public pool! I love picture books, however I must admit that I usually require words in order to enjoy them. Give me a good rhyme, a solid story, and I am an automatic fan. Even so, it's impossible to ignore the excellent visual storytelling in this wondrous, elegant production.

This book is large, and the author makes fine use of all that extra space to emphasize the vastness of our young explorer's underwater playground. The sketches are rather stark in the beginning, as the artist sticks to black and white to portray the young boy waiting to jump in the pool, only to be overrun by a collection of swimmers of all shapes and sizes. The pool is packed when the boy finally jumps in, and it's only when he gets beneath the crowded surface of the pool, that the illustrations begin to show color, becoming more vibrant as the story progresses.

When the boy meets a girl underneath the pool surface, their skin tones become brighter, along with their bathing suits. They then encounter an assortment of fish that range from whimsical to fierce. Perhaps my favorite part of the story is when they encounter a whale, You really get a sense of the magical essence of this book as you look at the two swimmers floating in front of the huge eye of the whale.

Finally, the two kids swim to the surface, and all of the swimmers (again in black and white) leave the pool, leaving only the two friends in vivid color. Their smile and the blush of their skin celebrate their adventure and provides the perfect ending to this whimsical tale. Pool is a beautiful book and a fine example of wordless storytelling that will allow young minds to celebrate all the possibilities their own imagination can conjure. A wonderful opportunity for play, this is a must have for any young reader.

Imagination at work
By Kathy Habel
This is a wordless picture book focused on imagination. In a crowded pool two children go on an underwater adventure much preferable to the craziness of the crowd above them. I wasn't sure about this book because the style of illustration is not my favorite but by the end I couldn't help but love it.

This is a marvelous wordless picture book that everyone will be amazed by ...
By Deb
The boy tentatively approached the edge of the empty pool. The water was still, not even a ripple touched the walls. He turned to watch as everyone rushed to the edge with rafts and inner tubes. Watch out, that person is going to cannonball into the still water! The pool was crowded and there was practically no room for one boy or was there? He sat on the edge, dipping his feet into the water. Perhaps he could squeeze in there somewhere and maybe he could go right between those two people! Whoosh, there the boy went, down, down, down, beneath the crazy crowd.

The toes and flippers, and oars from the rafts were above as he plunged to the bottom. Little bubbles were in his wake as he dove, but wait, there was someone else! The boy spotted a girl and they danced around each other in the water. The newfound friends began to explore the depths of the pool, a place where no one else but the two of them could discover. Now side-by-side, they looked at the strange little creatures. It was a world that no one else had ever seen, but what would they find?

This is a marvelous wordless picture book that everyone will be amazed by. Naturally, everyone will see something different in this tale, a tale that will spark the imagination. Some of the best tales are wordless. This one immediately brought to mind Jerry Pinkney’s “The Lion and the Mouse,” a tale that wowed everyone. JiHyeon Lee’s tale is equally magnificent, asking the reader to create a tale as they see it. Non-readers can easily read this work, creating as they go. In the end, the newfound friends emerge from the pool, delighted that they share a world that no one else has ever seen.

The artwork slowly evolves from monochrome-toned panels, adding splashes of color here and there, culminating in the full color portrait of two friends. The underwater creatures are lots of fun, but then again so is the comical view of the rather crazy crowd of people from an underwater vantage point. Wordless, yes, but this book has a lot to say and does so magnificently. “Pool” has to be one of the best books I’ve read in quite some time!
